I have a sport package 1996 550i. I am anticipating needing snow tires this winter. I have 18 inch wheels, 245/40 18 front, 275/35 18 rear which is the OEM standard.

Can I go with something different? the 550i non sport has 225/50-17s all four tires. Can I put snow tires on all this size with the sport package?

Try the wheels and tires forum. Gary should be able to answer any of your tire questions.

I have a 545i sport and have been running 245/40 18s on all four wheels during the winter for three years with no adverse effects. I picked up an extra set of 124s and traded the rear wheels for front ones with Detroit Wheel and Tire, and put my snow tires on the resulting set. It seems fine.

I run 225/50 16" for the winter. Mainly just because its a much cheaper set up then the big ass 18" set up. I highly recommend going with tire and wheel package. Makes changing them over twice a year a 20 min. project instead of going somewhere and paying money twice a year for install.

Keep an eye out all summer long on the various forums, Ebay, and Tire Rack. First two you can find people turning in lease cars that will dump off a nice set for around $500ish. Tire Rack watch for close out models you can save a lot per a tire. I got my tires from them for about 40%-50% off what they orginally retailed for on Tire Rack when they where a current tire.

presume you actually mean a 2006 550!

if so, the answer is yes! My winter tire setup is a set of 17" OEM style 116's with 225 50R17.
