Cross link from Ask A Dealer (didn't get any responses, trying here.)

Guys,
I picked up my 2008 e93 in February - all options except cold weather package with 26k miles - $42k.

Just found out we'll have an addition to the family, so looking to go to a larger car - so contemplating a 535 or 550 or if i'm really lucky a M5. Based on prices I'm seeing (retail):

2008 535 - $38-39k - 29k miles avg
2008 550 - $42-48k - 39k miles avg
2008 M5 - $55k - 28k miles avg

I'm looking to go back to the same dealer I bought the first car from but wanted some advice on:

1) Should I expect a good trade-in value since I'm going back to the same dealer?
2) Are there any back end promos that are going on with 5ers since the 2011 are coming out?
3) What should I be really looking (fully loaded) for the above cars?
4) Lastly, is the 550 worth it over the 535? No need for discussion on the M5, its' just about price then

Thanks all for any advice.

1) possibly, generally you will get more on a private sale than the dealer will give you on a trade-in, however, what is your time worth??? My slaes rep guy is always reasonable with me. I like that I can drive in with one car and drive away with a new car :D
2)some dealers have Demo model sales, check you local dealers...
3) sport package (active roll stabilization and active steering), comfort seats, and logic 7 sound sytem would be the three packages I consider minimum. (cold weather package is nice, but probably not worth it for FL)
4) Yes, Yes, Yes! I am biased though. I drove a 535 before getting my 550 but after research and not wanting to deal with a bad HPFP, I went with the 550. the sound and response of the V8 is nice. the only thing better in my opinion is a naturally apirated V10, but as you say, if the price is right. Don't forget that tires, brakes, oil, gas, insurance are more expensive with the v10! with the addition to the family, you also have diaper payments and RESP. Good luck! the e60 is great family sedan. We have three boys in our house that all play hockey, the big trunk is nice!!

Thanks Jboucher.

I'm speaking with the rep tomorrow to see what they can do for me. Funny you should mention hockey, one of my pet peeves these days is how to put my equipment in the trunk without scratching the bumper, etc. Small trunk in a e93 makes it pretty difficult. Plus putting the top down to put my equipment on the back seat seems entirely too cumbersome ;) I suppose I should have done my due diligence up front before the convertible! But hey, wife wanted convertible, wife got convertible.

Now time to see if I can get into a 550i at a reasonable price. Fingers crossed.

Sports package and L7 are a must. But I'd strongly recommend the ventilated seats since you are in FL. My (almost) fully optioned 550 doesn't have it and it's the only option that I REALLY wish I had.

About 535 vs 550, I am not a hard-driver, but not sure 550 is actually that much better than 535. I had 535 as a loaner for 2 days, but it's plenty fast (definitely not as fast as 550, though) for day-to-day driving and eats much less fuel. My 550 is getting near 14-15MPG in city whereas I could easily get at least 18-20MPG with 535 with spirited driving. It's not about the more money you have to spend on fuel, but more about the inconvenience of having to fuel up more frequently and just the notion that your car is a gas-guzzler - especially in today's environment :( Only reason I was able to ditch a SUV and got 5 series was because I persuaded my wife that 550 will have better MPG than it. But 550 is almost on par!) But you are considering M5 as well, so I don't think these concerns actually matter much to you :)

Totally with you on the gas part - we have a ML500 and having to fill that up is not fun LOL.

Good call on the ventilated seats! I'm speaking to my rep tomorrow - he's coming back from vacation. So we'll see what he comes back with. BTW, does this price seem high to anyone?

2008 550i Mileage: 39,734 - $47,995
CPO, M-package, Nav, Ipod, etc (no winter, no ventilated seats)

Thoughts?

Frankly the price seems high.

If you get LUCKY, then you should be able to go much much lower than that, but in my recent experience, most dealers didn't want to come down from the posted price :dunno:

Good luck!

I'm trying for $42k - think that's close?

I'm trying for $42k - think that's close?Good luck - unfortunately trades always confuse the "real" price. If he agrees to $42K then the trade will be adjusted accordingly to get to the price they want. That's why private party sales are best if you can do it.

Yup totally understand. I guess it all depends on the relationship with the rep since they know how much I bought the first car for anyway! :)

I'm hoping for $42k for the 550i and maybe breakeven on the e93.

Any other suggestions are appreciated. Let you guys know how it goes down.

So here's an interesting update - went back to the dealer site, and the 2008 550i is not listed as 45,998 instead of the 47,998. So maybe my $42 is doable!

Also consider the things I regret not getting: sports auto trans, backup sensor and the pass through for long items. Each and every option is a la carte, so it may be difficult to get the options you want on a pre-owned car.

If you have the money to spend then M5! but if you're practical like most you may want to consider the later model e60 550i ('08-'10) with M-sport package and you'll get a compromise. It looks close to an M5, insurance less, better MPG, relatively cheaper to maintain in the long run. I was able to get a CPO '09 550i with very low miles (7,900) with M-sport, cold weather package, iPod/HD radio (value package), rear shades, PDC, satellite radio. I traded in my 330i to get a larger car as it was tight with 2 car seats in the back.

Thanks All!

I ended up going with 2010 550i with M-pkg, Nav, iPod, Bluetooth, sat, PDC, no vent seats, no heads up display, no vent seats. It was a demo - 5000 miles - MSRP - 70k. Paid - $54k

Hope it's a good deal :( They ended up giving me payoff + $200 for my 335CIC.

Thanks again. Now I'm the proud owner of a e60 - Carbon Black/Black.
