I thought we need the key to first turn on the radio and then it will stay functional for about 20 minutes after removing the key. Mine will power on anytime, even in the mornings, without the key and stay on for 20 minutes before shutting itself down.

Some folks on Roadfly say that is the way their '02s and '03s work too, but one person with an '01 M3 says his won't.

Interesting.

I'm willing to bet this is tied into 2 other things:

-02+ cellphone prewiring running through the stereo and not through its own speaker
-Some 02+ owners noticing that their speakers hiss with the stereo on

Agreed .... actually all the CPT8000 installations hiss thru the lower and upper door speakers (at least on the E46s) ... although some folks can't hear the hiss do to physiological reasons (i.e. hearing sensistivity).

As to why the 03 5-Series does not power up without the key .... ya got me :dunno:

Hmm, I don't think so. Pre-09/01 cars play the cellphone from under the dash, not through the stereo.

Right ... I should have made it clearer that I was referring to 02+ cars.

BTW, since I don't use my CPT8000 system with voice activation (the original owner spend the $2500 to have it installed including the bumper antenna), I wonder if any of the 02 components can be used with the new bluetooth system (like the mic, etc).

Or is all my CPT8000 installed components just junk hardware now in my case. I've pulled Fuse 38 which kills the phone system and the stereo speaker hiss, unplugged the phone connectors under the console and replaced the console ejector insert with the rolltop tray version. :dunno:
