Intercepted at the Australian Grand Prix, Melbourne, March 9.

Coulthard: Anybody there?

Pit: [After long pause] Hello, David.

Coulthard: Who's that?

Pit: Robin.

Coulthard: Robin the wheel-bolt guy?

Pit: Yes.

Coulthard: How are you, Robin?

Pit: Well, I'm pretty busy right now, what with . . .

Coulthard: Robin? Can I talk to you for a while?

Pit: Well, perhaps it would be better if . . .

Coulthard: Do you ever think about the universe, Robin? I mean, really think about it? Like, the concept of an infinitely expanding space?

Pit: I just do the wheel-bolts.

Coulthard: Only, sometimes when I'm out here, behind the wheel, and there's nothing ahead of me but road, I get to wondering about the vastness of everything. Because if the earth is but a grain of sand within the universe, what does that make all of us, Robin? What do we all amount to?

Pit: I have to go now.

Coulthard: But if all we are is specks of dust, then explain why . . .

Yeah he did. But what's up with a conversation like this during the race ?

As amusing as it is, seems like an urban F1 legend to me...

I'm surprised Ron Dennis has kept DC for another year after that. My only thought is that maybe DC has always been a "space cadet" like that during the dull times and it isn't so unusual.

Interesting point, Steve.

I have always wondered though, do you believe that drivers, who especially are competing in high-speed motorsports have the sense of fear ?

After DC surviving the plane crash or Michael Schumacher surviving the Silverstone crash, do you think that these incidents affected (in a negative way) the way they do their 'job' ?

I don't think they have much time for fear. After an incident, if it can't put it out of mind they might be done. That's why people who do activities like this want to get right back on the "horse" again.

Speed Channel has a talk program called Wind Tunnel. I'm sure many of the people here have seen it. Recently Bill Simpson of Simpson saftey products was on. Simpson used to drive at Indy and he commented that when he found himself going down the back stretch (in practice or testing) thinking about a phone call he needed to make, he decided that was it. He could no longer concentrate and he stopped driving then and there. It sounds to me like DC is not concentrating on the job he's doing. I would not expect him to say anything except something relative to the performance of the car.

I still say... :bs:

"Urban Legend!"

Where is that transcript from?

Sounds like a load of crap to me. Take a look at the F1 pit lane and mechanics. It would seem to me that driver-pit communication is very tightly regulated and only a select few (race engineer, maybe Dennis) can actually speak to the driver. I don't think some wheelman is going to be even equipped with a microphone on his headset, and if he is, he's not going to be talking to the driver.
