View Full Version : Failsafe Transmission displays

I have an '02 745i (140K miles) which "recently" (last month) has been giving me headaches with this display. Have taken car to dearlership several times to "fix" the problem but it still persists. They've replaced an "EVM module" but nothing. I told them I am not putting money down a black hole on this car. I've read some earlier threads on "similar" issues and they have ranged from alternator to, battery to transmission fluid changing. I have had my transmission fluid changed if that bit of info helps. At this point in time I'm just so frustrated I feel like I want to get rid of car but not if there is a solution. Please any advise would be welcomed.

Did you have the transmission fluid replaced before or after the symptom started?

Sounds like a voltage issue. I would have the alternator and battery checked out.

I would do like the gentlemen before me said, check your battery and alternator for correct voltages. BMW's are very electronically intensive and like to throw check engine lights on for any reason it seems like.

a good indy shop with a code reader will give you further information....

I think the previous guys are right. I am currently having a problem with keeping the battery charged. When I fully charge the battery I get no warnings or display messages. As soon as the battery gets low all the error messages start coming on and the Failsafe transmission is one of them. When the battery gets low I cant even put the car in Park, it just stays in neutral and the P, D, N, R lights blink.

Get rid of your car! Dealer will give you a run around and try to sell you what you dont need. I sold my car because of this issue.

Try putting the parking brake on and see if the park emblem comes on.

Hey I had a similar problem. Just spent 1000 on an alternator and everything is fixed. It happens when the charge is low.

You sold your car rather than spending $400 on a replacement battery? That would be NUTZ!

Have them check the grounding strap.
