Flipping through toolwarehouse.com's catalog, I found some Ingersoll Rand sockets on sale. Anyone use them? Are the walls reasonably thin?

Well, you're not going to get really thin sockets for impact use. That's just the nature of their having to be strong enough to take several hundred lbft ot torque.

That said, I had a set of 1/2" drive short-length IR sockets (sold to the HACK as I actually wanted deeps) and they were comparable in 'thinness' to my standard Facom 1/2"ers.

Cool, thanks Kaz, that's what I wanted to hear. thetoolwarehouse had an IR set of 14 deep length metrics for $36, while a somewhat comparable 15 piece SK set was $90.

Would you say the IR sockets are just as good as the SK ones?

The SK ones (I have a couple) are heavier-duty (heavier/thicker) and Made in USA than the IRs which are MIT. But considering the price (close to HarborFreight), they're actually quite good quality. And I somehow doubt IR would market sockets that would be too weak for their drivers. My IR2131A will do 600lbft+ in reverse, after all.

Would you buy an IR set again? I'm willing to pay the difference if the SK's are noticeably better.

Yeah, so since I sold my standards to HACK, I need to get a set of deeps. I'll most likely get the IR deeps. I was satisfied enough with the quality that I don't think the SK's premium is going to be worth it for me.

 I guess I'll get a set for myself tomorrow. Thanks again, Kaz

Just a little issue.

Never use a chrome socket on an impact.

Only use a black finish.

The chrome will harden the socket and it will throw chrome when it breaks and with an impact you will break sockets.

Acually chrome plating causes hydrogen embrittlement. The process causes hydrogen to be absorbed by the metal weakening it.

But you are right, they will break when used with an impact gun.

OK, I got my IR impact sockets today from thetoolwarehouse.net. Came in a metal box with a cheapo plastic tray inside. The 17 mm socket fits without hitting the wheel (BBS RK). Markings are easy to read. Seem high quality, but what the hell do I know.

Also got my DeWalt 14.4V impact wrench from Amazon. I was tempted by the Hitachi, but I already have a DeWalt 14.4 drill. The batteries are actually pretty crappy (1.3 Ah NiCd's) but I now have 4 packs that charge in 1 hour so I'm not worried. Anyway, hadn't taken my rims off in a while, and the lugs were really tight (would need the breaker bar and some stomping). The DeWalt needed a couple extra blows, but got the lugs loosened. For reference it's rated at 130 ft/lbs.

Wow, that sucks. The standard depth ones I got came in a cardboard box with a metal tray with a hinged handle inside.

Yeah, I'll probably get one of those magnetic trays for the sockets and use the metal box for something else.
