A friend asked me for help:
He has a business truck but wants a fun car to drive. Right now he's looking for a Z3 coupe (the one that looks like a miniature hatchback/non convertible Z), or Z3 coupe M series, preferiably 2000 or 2001, and wants to spend less than $18k.

First of all, it's a difficult car to find.

Second of all, he'll be stretching his budget with a 2000/2001 Z even without it being an M series.

He's tried a few auto sites to see what is out there and his cousin sells BMWs at a stealer so he's on the look out.

Anything else that can be done?

You could probably get a 99 Z3 coupe for $18K if you looked hard enough. The 3.0i coupes are worth more than the 2.8 coupes.

Like this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=36468&item=2446381487)

Or this one (but it is suspect, come to Z-series board to see why) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=36468&item=2445692840)

And 01/02 M Coupes are in the mid to upper 30s.

99 and 00 ones are in the mid to upper 20s.

It's called an M Coupe :)

I have been watching the prices on M Coupes and it will be some time before he could get one in good shape for less than $18k.

Pincone is right in the post above about the current "normal" prices. You would have to stumble across an incredible deal to get anything approaching the target price.

These guys sometimes have things... but not for 18K, not at this time at least!
