View Full Version : Question about map cd's

07-23-2010, 07:13 PM
I purchased my 04 745i from a Toyota dealer (but had a BMW dealer look it over) and it didn't have map CD's
The Toyota Dealer agreed to purchase them, so they ordered these from the BMW dealer:

They don't work. Still asks me to input map cd's.

these say "Tele Atlas" brand and I'm fairly certain the CDs' (DVD's?) should be Navteq.

What do i need?

Here are some pics of my NAV drive.
the p/n points to nav02, but it doesn't have the DVD logo. I'm befuddled

BTW, I did hit the search, but to no avail.

Hey brother, the 1st problem is you have a CD drive and your trying to have it read a DVD. If Im not mistaken in 04 or so they made the switch to DVD Nav systems. The bad news is you wont be able to get the most up to date maps, because the ones on the CD are older. Other alternative is to switch to DVD nav, which costs big bucks! Anyone with a CD Nav can burn the cd for you. Let me know if you want me to, I have the same.

I thought the same thing, however, after some research, I do have a NAVI02 part number... weren't NAVI02's dvd based? IIRC, NAVI02's were standard halfway through the 2003 Model year, and I have a 2004.

but since I use my navigation on my droid just fine, the issue of the "low performance" cd-based nav isn't a concern... although, yes, I would love a set of nav CD's.

Highly doubt it as your DVD's aren't even reading. As a previous poster mentioned, you more and likely have a NAVI01 unit with a NAVI02 label. btw-Navteq was a vendor up until last year. BMW is now using Tele-Atlas which also works on the NAVI02 and NAVI03 DVD systems. If you want to verify for sure that you have a NAVI01 sys, I can send you out an old CD I have if you PM your mailing info. That way once that works, you can purchase CD sets on ebay or upgrade your hardware to NAVI03 which has the following UI

Son of a b...

So I decided to dissect my NAV drive.

Turns out the internals are all NAVI01. the top lid (where the label is) was from a NAVI02. pisses me off. That's one of the things I checked prior to purchase of the vehicle.
