So the new 7-series came out in 2002, and the chasis codes are E65/E66.

Z4 came out in 2003, and it's E85

So why the newest BMW (2004), 5-series, has a chasis code of E60? Shouldn't it have a number higher than "E85"? :dunno:

That refers to when they started planning and engineering on the car's development. They don't always work out in numerical order in terms of when the car is released for sale.

Kinda makes me wonder what they were working on, say, between the E36 and E46. Well, besides the E39. There are 9 other little E's out there that never got to see the light of day.

E38 is the old 7-series...

Dunno about the others... :dunno:

Only 2 :)

E37 - Electro powered prototype - developed until November 1981
E35 - engine unknown - developed until October 1979

BMW seems to use up a lot more development codes these days than they used to.

Not nearly as many gaps between E21 and E39 (21/23/24/28/30/31/32/34/36/38/39), for example.

E67 - 7 series security version
E68 - Hydro engine prototype ( 7 Series)

E69 - E79 still unused.

E80/E81/E82 - 1/2 Series
E82/2 - Z2 prototype

It seems to jump around, but yeah, the diversification into dedicated roadster chassis and SUVs and little SUVs and vans and... seems to have increased development exponentially - nine between the E21 and E30, only 6 up to the E36, 10 to the E46, but now a whompin' 44 up to the E90...

Why?

Why?

FIZ - Forschung- und Innovations Zentrum, Munich is deciding which E code for which car/prototype :)

E69 - E79 still unused.

Whoa, I didn't know that. That's one big hunk of the 44.

Which old car? They're both doing fine, although the 325 is running rich and my newest suspect, still to be determined if it's the case, is the AFM. I would like to be too rich, instead of the car, but it doesn't look like that will be happening. The Miata is running great as always, but I am selling it to make room for a different one. I have decided to give up on anything XY related for the time being, and think I will be happier that way.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! That makes sense now!

We all like to be too rich! :D

Interesting and ironic image of a mazda zooming around an autocross course flanked by what appears to be several huge fuel tankers (might be full of milk?) Gotta wonder what they drink w/ their lattes up there in Washington state. A Kodak moment for sure!!
