Dealer wants to charge $175 for installation. Does that sound right? I heard it only take a half hour to install. They told me it needs to be programmed also..

thanks..04-330ZHP

It needs to be programmed to your garage door opener. Not something they are going to do for you, unless they do house calls now.

Do the install yourself, it is a really easy one and there are some great DIYs here and elsewhere, just do a bit of searching.

Yes, search feature is your friend. You can get it for around $130 from either www.circlebmw.com or www.pacificbmw.com It took me around 15-20 minutes to install myself and was easy. Search for DIY.

I just got the UGDO for my birthday and installed it on my 2000 540/6sp. The wiring is already there just tucked up into the roof and it came with a new panel which has the cutout for the unit and matches the headliner color. The unit snaps into the panel, plug the connector in and snap the panel back in place. I also had to swap the sun roof switch.

However the installation requires only a screwdriver (tip taped to prevent marring the panels) and about 15 minutes of time. Once installed, with the ingition switch in postion 2, press and hold buttons 1 and 3 for 20 sec. until the green LED flashes to clear the memory. Then press either button 1, 2 or 3 while holding the remote opener next to the unit and pressing the button on it until the green LED flashes (about 3-5 sec.). Repeat for other garage doors. That's it!

Note, the garage door you are programming will operate during the process so make sure there are no objects in its path.

E46s just use the factory panel which is already pre-scored for the hole. I believe you can buy one with a hole, but why?

Also, programming a rolling-code opener is a 2-step process which is now well documented.

I can't seem to disconnect the cable from the sun roof switch. Any hints/tips here?

Just wiggle the connector, it should pull right out.

Hmmm, this never happened to me. Not disagreeing that it did it for you, just saying I've never had my doors open/close while programming the remote with 4 different cars over 5 years. :dunno: ?

Considering you need to press the button on a working remote to program another, this doesn't make sense to me.

Ok, got it and got it all installed. Works well once I discovered you have to hold the button down for a moment to "activate" the opening/closing.
