Which is the best M car of all?

BBC's Top Gear gives it a try:

End of story!?

Well, in such a company second place is quite respectable, I'd say :str8pimpi Thanks for posting!

You have to define "best". :)

They are ALL darn fine cars.

Is this the one where Steve Soper was asked to go test drive a fleet of M cars? Great idea for a story, but I would take the results with a grain of salt (like any test, obviously).

According to what I've read, Soper had passengers on some of those laps. On top of that, he owns at least one dealership in Europe, so he stands to gain from propping up the newer models. Of course, he's also an excellent driver. :dunno:

It was definitely a well written article, but I wouldn't put blind faith in the results.

About the CSL: Performance: 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds, max speed 155mph electronically limited, (or around 170mph with limiter removed 'for holders of a valid racing licence, for track use only')

We all know the M5 would blow way past 155 mph without a limiter. Wonder why he didn't mention that?

Yup agree. When it comes to M cars I would expect the car walking away with the grand prize to be the car that delivers most M (M for motorsport) on a track. That is, compared to a real racing car (like DTM cars etc.) -which M car comes closest. That is how I view it... How would you view it...?!

Thanks for posting.
I enjoyed the read.

So, let's see...
1) E46 M3 CSL - I can't get in USA.
2) E39 M5 - Stopped production. Must keep in mind, if shopping for a used car.
3) E46 M3 - that's the best I can do. Yep. Will do.

I am biased since I own a new M3 SMG but in the real world this car does everything so well it's hard not to appreciate it's wonderous engineering. So far I have driven about 1/2 the M cars EVO reviewed (including the CLS!!) and I don't agree about the M5: It's just too massive even though the torque is addictive.
I'll cast my vote for the E46 M3/S54 ( w/ a few mods it can be even better.)
