I'm not quite impressed by the 7k redline in the 1M, seems a bit conservative.

Agree - one thing that makes this less than pure M is no screaming 8+K red line...
Time to reset expectations about what an M product is? Specially after this and the x5/X6 M?

Are all future M engines going to be turbos? Seems like that's the trend.

Yes M cars are going towards turbos due to gas mileage reasons. I doubt you will see the high redlines anymore but they should be a bit higher than the regular models.

Ignore it and see if they're really being conservative.

E34 and E39 M5 both had a 7K redline didn't they? Both of those cars seem to be well respected by M enthusiasts.

M5, M3, Z3/4M all have real M engines. The 1M has the same engine as the 335is, which is pretty potent but is NOT an M engine. Basically the 1M is a body kit, suspension, limited slip, and M seats. Sounds like a sport package to me. BMW has totally sold out the M brand with this car (I'm not going to mention the X5/6M). A huge part of the M mystique are the special engines they have been blessed with. I personally hope the 1M is an epic fail but unfortunately it won't be.

With FI the torque curve is flat so you don't need the high RPM bandwidth.

If you haven't experienced the S54B32 at full cry you'll never understand.

I did, and then it blew up on me at Button Willow.
No seriously, if the car has the WBS, a diff, and is massaged by the M, why not?
If you want to talk about selling out, the X5M and the X6M are the ones to complain about.

I did not make any statement about the durability of the S54 but I bet it will be better in the long run since it won't have HPFP problems. I personally don't believe it is a M if it doesn't have an M engine. If they called it the M Sport or M Track Package, I would have no problems.
Don't even get me started on the XMs.
