does anyone use studded snow tires (eg nokian) or the regional green diamond snow tires? what is the general opinion re. studded snow tires compared to regular snow tires?

Where can you still use studded snow tires? I thought they were pretty much banned b/c of how badly they beat up the roads. In general, they work like no other type of snow tire you have ever been on. I don't know anything about the particular tires you mentioned, but I do remember driving straight up hills that were covered in sheets of ice from freezing rain without issue.

You might want to check the manual to make sure you can use them on your car. I don't know why not, but with all the electronic nannies, you never know.

They're allowed in WA state in the winter... I put them on when we had snow on the ground and took 'em off when we didn't. On the snow - man, they're terrific. I have a very steep driveway, and even when it was ice on top of snow I could drive right up it. They do chew up the roads if there isn't snow on the ground, so if you aren't keen on swapping tires and just want to keep them on all winter, go nonstudded.
