Snapped 2 pics today of my car next to my neighbor's 325is (I thought it was a 325e, but it turns out it was 325is... it has 64k miles on it).

In Before E46 bashing....

That is a nice E30 :yikes: Got any pics of the front? Your car is significantally lower with much shorter windows as well...

I used to park my 323Ci next to a 635CSi in the garage, and the two cars were about the same size.

Are you shure about that?

The E24 has always looked longer to me :dunno: Maybe it's just an illusion due to the very sleek body. It certainly weighs quite a bit more than the E46...

No, the 635 was slightly longer, but not a whole heck of a lot. I remember one morning specifically when I parked right next to it thinking to myself "I've always wanted a 635 but the car I've got is almost the same size and 15 years newer."

There was an M6 and an E34 M5 at the autocross yesterday; both are great, classic cars, but neither one is an autocrosser. Both looked a little woozy out there on that tight track, and the 3.5L six (by modern standards) just doesn't have a huge amount of poke relative to their weight. It's amazing how much faster the E36s were.

Oh, and just FWIW, for a little while fast-time-of-the-day was held by an E46. ;)

Not feeling that chrome bumper on the 325is. Your E46 is a better car.

"For a little while"? Let me guess, you beat it? :p

I had a good weekend too. No M6s at the track http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5065

I will auto-x for the fist time at the Naval Air Station this weekend :)

Alee-

If that guy ever wants to sell that car, EMAIL ME RIGHT AWAY.

I've been on the lookout for a white E30 325is for a while. The "s"s are more rare than I would have thought. BTW, the "s" stands for SPORT.

I still miss my old E30 and would loe to pick up a clean copy. Typical used prices are $3-4K, so it's not like it'd be a huge investment. Parts are relatively cheap too.

Nope. Nor did I. One of the E36 M3s did though. But that E46 time WAS held by a board member, CD-55.

Check out this thread at Roadfly for a couple of pics-

You'd love this car too... it's pristine. :D 5M, for your pleasure.

I'll be sure to think of you if he ever wants to sell it. Big if, cause he loves his E30. :D

No, I'm not that quick yet; I just thought it was a bit funny in light of the recurring E36/E46 spats.

yeah, those 14'' balloon tires are a dead giveaway. :D

i remember reading somewhere that the e46 is the same size as the old 5-series was during the e30 years. seeing those pics, i believe it....wonder how an e46 would look next to an e21 (my first bimm).

The E28 is slightly bigger than the E46. I learned to drive on one. It was a fun car, but heavier than the E46 and not anywhere near as capable.

Were the 330s and M3s in the same class? I like auto-x, and came in second last time to an ITR on Victoracers. At the Houston BMWCCA, they grade classes by a number of points given by a base level from your model plus mods. http://www.houston-bmwcca.com/z3/Autocross/AUTOX_Worksheet.htm

A 330 SP gets more points than an E36 M3 :dunno: (and so does a 328Ci SP ;))

Wow, that's a hell of a lot more complicated than the system our chapter uses. Spec'ing out my old E46 (323Ci, SP, ECIS) and my M3 (strut bar) yields 42 for the 323 and 43 for the M3, both in class "A." Not sure that result makes sense. I also think it's a bit odd to not deduct any points for the convertibles; if a strut bar brace adds 1 and a CAI adds 2 (and the SP adds 5), one would think a convertible would deduct at least 4.

Anyhow, up here 330s (and 323s) are classed as "S1," with many of the other recent non-M BMWs (and the M1, believe it or not). M3s (all of them) are in "SS." Your scores are modified by a multiplier based on class. The 330s (and even the 325s) have by far the biggest advantage from this classification system. The 330Ci is almost as capable a track car as the E36 M3, yet it gets a substantial mark-up based on its lower class. The M3C probably has the biggest class disadvantage, since it runs in SS but is carrying around an extra 200 lbs. and is nowhere near as rigid.

Here's the explanation:

I don't know why cabrios aren't deducted :dunno: It does seem to be a fairly logical system though, maybe a few more classes would be nice. The 330 is nearly as capable as an E36 M3.
