My mom's 528i shakes rather violently frequently upon a cold start... no check engine or check control messages... Anyone experience this?

Yeah, they do that. It's kinda f-d cause the dealer will tell you it's normal or, if you take it to the tech, they'll say, "unable to replicate".
Does it go away:
1.after you start driving
2.after the car warms up?
3.remains

Well, more info:

It's a side-to-side shaking, lasts for about a minute if she lets it. And only in the morning when cold. Since it's repeatable in the morning, I think we'll leave it in the dealer overnight and see what they say...

I brought it up a few months ago and at that time several of us had the problem. My problem pretty much went away after a few weeks. However, occasionally it still shakes from a cold startup but much less than it did when I first got it. I am on the central coast of California and it doesn’t get very cold here.

This may not be your problem, but when the 528 moves from cold start to normal running it goes through an unstable phase. Apparently a double vanos problem. You have to nurse it through that. Once it reaches full op temp it's good to go.

That's exactly the problem I am encountering with my new 528. Shakes side to side on cold start and it goes away after a min or so. Should I call my dealer?

No, wait a few weeks, it will go away completely as others have said.

Hi, got our 11' 528i for a couple weeks now. started noticing the side-to-side shake on cold start. I'm just wondering if the shake did go away after a few weeks for those having the same problem. And if you brought it to the dealer, could youe let me know what the dealer said about it? Thanks!

Same thing happens with my 528. However, once I pull out of the garage and start down the driveway, it stops. I haven't taken it in to the dealer--will wait until my first oil change. The degree of shaking varies--sometimes it is very slight.

I have some VERY slight shaking with my 535 during cold starts too. It's almost imperceptible, but it's there.

Mine is 1100 miles now but still shakes till I bring it out of my garage. No other issues

My 535 does it too, and still at 15,000 miles, with both cold starts and occasionally with warm starts. This issue was on a very short list when it was at the dealer recently. The tech said he couldn't replicate it. I told my SA my 528 loaner did it too, and I challenged him to check other cars. He said 4 out of the 4 cars he started did the same thing, and that the shop foreman told him it was a known issue still without an answer from the factory.

My 528 does the exact same thing, but only for a minute or so. After reading all the posts about this, I've come to the conclusion that it's normal.

My E60 535 does this and they keep telling me it's too much ethanol in the fuel.

Mine shakes to. Strange...my 2008 535i ran just perfect on the exact same fuel from the same location.

my 535i shakes on start up and hardly noticeable on idle at red lights... bringing it in next week to get my pull to the right fixed with software and they also noted the rough idle and will take a look at it. they said it will take a couple of hours so im dropping it in the morning and geting a loaner! ill tell you how this goes after everything is done and will post a work order

any more updates on engine vibration in the F10?

I have a 2012 535i and it shakes excessively left to right on start, both cold starts and warm. It goes away after a few seconds but still frustrating.

BMW can't replicate it as the problem comes and goes when it feels like it.

Spark plugs, coils, injector or even the PCV valve.
Personally i would suggest trying an oil and filter change first. My car (An E60 with the N52K, which is exactly the same engine as yours) did the same but instead of shaking it would choke every time i started it, as if it couldn't start properly and sometimes it needed 2 cranks to start correctly. I went with the easiest job first, did an oil change with Mobil 1 0W-40 and a Mann Oil filter. Now 8 months later, car works perfectly but i feel the problem is coming back . . . time for another oil change. :bigpimp:

Been having that issue since we bought our 2011 528i. I have the best SA you can ask for. They kept our car twice for total of over a month, replaced the injectors, coils, some other stuff and it runs the same if not worse. There is nothing they can do, it is normal with this car but certainly doesn't feel normal and doesn't ease my worries. This is our 3rd consecutive BMW with engine related gremlins. We're really getting tired of these issues. We have only stayed with the brand for the obvious driving experience but we're seriously looking at other brands. I am predicting that BMW will take a big hit in reputation if this stuff continues as it seems to more and more throughout their lineup. I can't see myself owning a recent model past the warranty.

Rough start was common on my E92 328i. I think it is not unusual for the N52 engine. In my case it lasted only long enough to wake up all six cylinders.

My 2011 528i with 24K miles usually shakes side to side slightly for about 15 seconds. Might be longer if it were colder here but climate is mild. Dealer said no problem and couldnt replicate condition.Am I suprised? Otherwise, great car.

Hi BobRbob

What gremlins do you have. We can compare. Not too bad though.

When I had my F10 550i it was determined to be the injectors. This was after mentioning it to my SA and then bringing it in twice. Replacing them seemed to resolve the problem. I no longer have it so I'm not sure if it eventually came back again.
