Discuss plans, meet-ups, etc. here.
We had a great caravan last year, with a crowd starting in Seattle, picking up 'festers on the way through Oregon, meeting up with the Bay Bimmerz gang in two locations in the SF Bay Area, then blasting through to Santa Barbara.
Let's do it again, even better this time!

Yep, this is the place, 3 years running,I just moved my reservations from the 24th to the 30th.
I, as well as others, will start the "first" caravan from the Bay Area on Friday the 24th from the East Bay, probably around 10am, or so (yet to be discussed) and meet up at the In & Out Burger in Gilroy for our final meet up and then head South for S.B.!
I'm sure there will be caravan's later that day and possibly early Sat. morning, at least it's been that way in the past.

I should be joining up in/around San Jose and I'm trying to get my friend here at work to join in with his new 330ci.
Does the Ramada fill up? I'm thinking that I'm going to look for a more interesting and/or upscale alternative :bigpimp: and I'm wondering if I should expedite my search.

I don't know if the Ramada fills up. It's big, but not huge. The parking lot was quite full the weekend of Bimmerfest last year. I don't know the percentage of guests who were there for Bimmerfest. You probably still have some time to make the reservation because it's not for a while yet.
For Bimmerfest 3 I stayed at Fess Parker's DoubleTree (at least I think it was the DoubleTree. I know it was Fess Parker's!). That place was huge. And quite nice too. They say that Fess even stops by once a week or so. You remember Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone don't you? :)

The Ramada is pretty nice, just make sure you reserve a garden side room. This year I think I'll bring a hose along with my detailing gear -- I am not going near that car wash again.

Yeah, stay away from the car wash!
Last year we actually borrowed a hose from the Ramada, but it took a lot of explanation at the front desk. Then they told us it would take some time to find the hose. When we went around the corner of the building, I think we just found the dang thing still attached to the faucet! We are going to bring our own hose this time, just to be sure.

I'm thinking that I'm going to look for a more interesting and/or upscale alternative :bigpimp: and I'm wondering if I should expedite my search. The reason to stay at the Ramada is the camraderie. Several of us have already made reservations... It is decent, modestly priced accomodations that most people can afford, so we get a good crowd.
The main point of the fest is the fellowship! I have to say, I wouldn't trade the hours shared in the parking lot washing and detailing Friday evening, the breakfasts across the street at (what was it, Lyons?), etc., with all my new buds and some old, over the weekend.
You can have a nice hotel anytime. The chance to hang and share with a bunch of fellow enthusiasts and netfriends only comes around once a year!

Oh, and Keith, Cliff, et. al., I promise not to make the trip on slicks this time so you don't have to worry about having to peel me off the road on the way back :wow:
Man, those bald pilots, in that rainstorm, was the most squirrely (and quite terrifying) driving experience I think I ever had!

The place across the street is the IHOP. My back tires are going to have to get replaced before the Fest as they're getting close to the wear bars (at 13k miles - I think I'll replace them in early March). I wonder how many hose bibs they have at the Ramada? Betcha an inquiry along those lines would make their weird-ass call of the year list :D

Send an email to baybimmerz@hotmail.com and ask to be added to the mailing list (http://www.baybimmerz.com/AboutUs/ContactUs.htm). Last year the Pacific Northwest folks spent the night in Pleasanton and left with the East Bay folks from Stoneridge Mall. We joined up with the South/North bay folks at the In n' Out in Gilroy and the combined caravan continued on from there.
An FRS radio is strongly recommended for the caravan and for the road rally by the way, so if you don't have one, buy one.

Does this caravan ride up together in one big nice group or does it break apart like other caravans ive been involved with. I swear i thought a caravan was supposed to stay together in a tight group but once we got on the road you wouldve thought it was a rat race. everyone trying to get there first instead of together. It wasn't fun at all

Well, we try to stay together. This caravan had at least 50 cars last year. You just can't get 50 cars all on the freeway at once unless you have a police escort to stop the freeway traffic so we can all swoop down the on-ramp at once.
What happens is that we tend to clump into groups of about 10 cars or so. The groups get spread out over several miles of the freeway, so that sometimes the front cars can't hear the FRS radios from the last cars in the caravan. We re-connect the group at each stopping point (usually an In-N-Out Burger).
But at least in each group of cars, we stick together in a tight group and don't try to leave each other in the dust too much :D We run a "pick" now and then to hold up a recalcitrant sunday driver so that the rest of the group can get around.

A true case of "live and learn" :D Seriously, though, I can say with no question that DSC saved my life -- when I was hydroplaning all over the place during that incident, there was no doubt, none at all, that DSC was doing a magnificent job of getting as much traction and stability as possible. Without it, I would have been spinning completely out of control. Instead, I was fishtailing back and forth, fighting to get things back to rolling straight. All that at -- what were we all doing in that downpour -- 75mph?
I milked that rubber well beyond reason -- got two years and 30k miles out of those tires. To be fair to myself, I had ordered the S03's from tirerack, and they were supposed to be installed thursday, the day before leaving for the 'fest. Tires didn't show in time, hence the thrill-ride.
Thrash -- you gonna make it again this year? Your dad too?

Yeah, i'm pretty sure we'll be there. We might need some new tires before we go this time. Can you believe he's already go 60k+ miles on the 01 330ci? I guess thats what happens when you drive 92 miles a day. Still runs like a dream though. I can't wait for bimmerfest again, last year was a blast and i met so many great people. I expect we'll have a pretty large caravan this year -- bigger than last year. We had some trouble coordinating last year -- things like getting on the freeway together, etc.
We should work out some logistics ahead of time so that we can maximize the success and fun of the trip. I'll start with a few items:
An FRS radio is a requirement. If you don't have one, GET ONE! They're dirt cheap now, so there's no excuse. Even better is a 2W GMRS radio, which are widely available to the consuming public now, and are also getting pretty cheap, although if you want to be strictly legal, you need to apply for (and get) an FCC operators license. I've got one, and all it amounts to is an application and paying the fee.
Waypoints should be planned out in advance. Last year, we made one additional stop after everyone was together, in Atascadero at the In N Out, for food and biobreak. This worked out okay, but getting back on 101 together was a real problem.
Smooth logistics for getting on and off the freeway. Suggestions, please.
Radar-equipped cars bracket the caravan front and back. It's helpful if we know ahead of time who's got the cop-busters, so we can defer to them if they need to move forward or back to keep the caravan safe.
Add your own thoughts, please. At this point, think of this as a free-thought exercise... We can consolidate and agree on some basic principles and logistics after the creative process has run its course. :D

We should also have people with police scanners at the front and rear of the caravan and have some agreement about how fast we will go, or break up into groups for those that want to hit triple digits.
Keith
02-17-2004, 02:15 PM
We should also have people with police scanners at the front and rear of the caravan and have some agreement about how fast we will go, or break up into groups for those that want to hit triple digits.
#1-We "always" have the Valentines up front, in the middle and in the back.
#2-We "always" have our 140ish crowd and they will "always" do what they want.
and they "always" slow down (or pullover) and wait for the pack.
#3-It will be ok, myself and a couple others from Bay Bimmerz put this caravan together every year and it seems to go quite well, "but" there will "always" be someone that isn't happy with something.
When you deal with this many cars/people, you do the best you can.
#4-Like others have said FRS radios is the only way to go  , if you don't have one, buy one, this is for everyone, no radio, no communication! :blah:
So, come out SpeedinBlueBima, you will have a great :drive:

PS Technically I live in Washington, but Vancouver Washington is a suburb of Portland, Oregon. Telling people I live in Vancouver makes people think i'm Canadian (like the Dave's that came to the fest with us last year.)

Hey, are you driving straight thru again this year, or are you meeting up with us

There's going to be a "very" early meet this year that Cliff and I are heading up.
Starting at 6:30 AM in Pleasanton and meeting with whoever else at Gilroy at 8:00 AM.
We are finalizing everything this week for times, meeting spots (2) etc...
I, as well as others, want to get down to Santa Barbara earlier this year, get checked in and relax, wash our cars, etc....

Driving on 680 through San Jose isn't all that exciting, so you'll only miss a photo op in the Nordstrom's parking lot and 45 minutes worth of radio chatter.

Last year it was a lot later and it was 5pm before we arrived in SB. The idea is to get there early enough to get checked in to the hotel and have enough time to detail the cars. The original plan was to have a second, later caravan from the Bay Area for folks like yourself, but no one wanted to take charge of it. C'est la vie.

Just a heads up for those of you coming down from the north, the Highway Patrol is working the stretch from Santa Maria to Santa Barbara (101 Hwy) very hard so keep this in mind on your way. You wouldn't want to end up on the web with a picture of a Highway Patrol guy getting your info!

Thanks K, I kinda figured that this would be happening all the way from the Oregon border to the Mexico border.
I'm sure with all that is happening in Santa Babara lately, that the word is out is out up and down the state (you know, CHP/cop talk) :dunno: so they will have there eyes peeled.
We always keep our eyes open thru King City, but thanks for the other info, S.M. TO S.B.

Guillermo, if you have a Costco card, or no someone that does, go there, they are there for 50 bucks, Motorola!
Hey, I've got you down for meeting up at Gilroy, not Pleasanton, is that right, or did I screw up? :dunno:

These will work well for $40. Technically you need a license from the FCC for the GMRS radios, but I doubt they enforce it much. Whatever you get, make sure they have subcodes.

Thanks for the info. It's been a couple of years now since I wandered up/down State Street, my mother used to live a couple of streets over... I'm also looking at a place up on the Riviera that looks great but for this trip someplace livelier would probably be better. :D

I just made a trip from OC up to Portland on the 5. All was clear until I hit Los gatos. Then there were several CHPs north of Redding, which surprised me. Oregon is notorious for cops, but there aren't many of them. In other news, just wanted to let you guys know that I am out this year. Baby on the way and I have been grounded due to wife's risk of premature delivery. Have fun!

FWIW, we had a few casualties in what turned out to be a fairly epic return caravan and I wouldn't mind seeing some updates posted to this thread. Ben's blown 99 M3 cab lost a pulley on Highway 1 just South of Big Sur (pretty much the ass end of nowhere) and Greg's E34 M5 lost its water pump in Gilroy.
On the bright side, lunch at Lolo's in Morro Bay was delicious. I dropped Boris off at Keith's house around 7:30 or so...

Holy cow, Cliff. That sucks!
But look on the bright side. At least we *didn't* have a mini-van crash in Monterey with a caravan pile-up!!! What was she thinking? :-)
It was great riding with you. Later!

It didn't suck for me, fortunately (beyond it being a very long drive home). I'm just wondering how the folks whom we left behind fared.

What's up guys, I just got out of bed and I "never" sleep this late, just really exhausted!
Carl and I got home around 12:30, the truck finally showed up at 8:30 and then we flew (that driver drove that truck like Ben drives his M3) up to Seaside to drop his M3 off at My BMW.
Ben can talk more about it when he can.
I talked to Allen when we were coming into Monterey and he told me about Greg's car. :yikes:
We will have to start a new thread about our experiences this year at Bimmerfest and our drive up and back, watch for that.
I now need to check about 20 more emails.

We made some good time up 1 after we left you guys at 6pm. I rolled in about 9.
BTW, I'm intensely curious to know if my diagnosis was correct regarding the failure. I sure hope that pully was shattered just from the broken belt, and not a failure of the tensioner and oil filter housing. Keith -- PM me Ben's email!

Since I was staying north of Santa Barbara, I got there a bit earlier, but even meandering along CA-135 and 1, I was done with lunch at Lolo's around 12:30. Hi Dave, if you haven't heard yet, it was the water pump the froze up and broke the belt, then I'm sure caused the damaged to the pulley. :dunno:

Yeah, if you have a chance to grab the twisties, you gotta go for it, cuz you never know when you are going to be caught behind a truck or something.
Your wife and Susan shouldn't feel too bad either. My wife gets car sick on twisties so I wouldn't have been able to do the drive with her...either that, or i'd have to let her drive :bawling:

She's fine when she drives, but let her drive :nono:
We will have to go down 101 then cut over to Cambria and then up Hwy 1 to get to Ragged Point in the fall!
