Personally I'd like to see everyone down in San Diego take the 5 all the way up through Los Angeles until it hit the 126 that way we can have a huge caravan coming from the South. Now what time we left would all depend on what time everyone wanted to get there. Anyone have any idea how long it would take at 65 ;) ?

Ok, the past 3 years the SD people have met up in south county, and then again in Carlsbad for the north county people. We would then drive up to OC (usually Huntington Beach area) and then up to the SF Valley. The SF Valley meeting spot is off the 101 and the 405, so the 5 up by Magic Mt would not work. It is sorta out of the way. We would then go north and have collected Ventura County people without stopping (merging in, with some success as we pass). Then non-stop (barring CHP issues) to B-Fest.
This can change, and stopping at the foot of the grade dropping into Camarillo sounds like a good idea, since it gives people a chance to catch up. It also allows people in Ventura County meet up with us, as oppossed to just merging in.
SD people have left at about 5-5:30am in the past, trying to make time so we DON'T have to speed (although we usually do anyway). Not sure what the plans are this year though, since I will be going up the night before. I won't be involved in any of the planning for the Sat drive, but DDD probably will (from SD). Look to the DTM and BF.C people that usually plan drives and caravans to chime in soon about times.

I don't know if this is a great idea or just a really stupid idea that seemed great at the time. Anyways I was thinking we all take walkie talkies and desginate a BMW channel than we could have a designated person from the far South come up the 405 and tell people that the caravan is closing in, that way you don't really have to meet up anywhere, just along the 405.

I figured that it started (Bimmerfest) around 10 a.m., or atleast thats when the majority of people would get there. I thought about leaving around 7-7:30 a.m., that way we could get there around 9:30 or 10 a.m. in worst case. I think from L.A., Santa Barbara is about a 2-2.5 hr. drive. What city are you in? My friends that are going live in Downey, and i live in Santa-Fe Springs so we'll probably meet somewhere in one of those two cities. I wish someone would post on where the L.A. caravan will meet that way we can plan our departure time accordingly.

I'm on the west-side of LA (Brentwood section) by Sunset Blvd, and the I-405 Fwy. Usually in the past all the 3 counties (San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles) have met up at Balboa Park in Encino (San Fernando Valley) off the I-101 Fwy, then from there headed up and out to Santa Barbara. I'm down for this as well.

This sounds good I'm not sure what time people meet up last year :dunno: but yea we really have to keep in mind that there are Two! times involed a meet time and leave time...a 30 min window is good for people who run a bit late and we don't want to leave them behind. I can see the OC people want to meet up so lets start talking guys...I think we should aim to get to the fest at the latest before 10.
We have to take a look at traffic last year I was on the road (alone) about 7am from around the park meeting area and there was really not a lot of traffic at all as it gets later it might pick up... :dunno:
If the OC people want to meet up it take what about an hour :dunno: to get to where they are to Balboa park?
Ideas guys?

Its best to meet close to a freeway entrance. Since we take the 101 all the way, maybe we should be somwhere in calibassas(although i hate the area) it will allow alot of different groups to flow right into a designated spot and all drive from there. if we are on the road before 11 there wont be much traffic. Depending on cruise speed it will take 45mins to 1hr and a half. there is also a huge parking lot on topanga canyon and venture, right off the 101, could meet there and hit the freeway easily

I agree that we should get to SB no later than 10AM so we should meet at Barnes and Noble at around 7:15 and leave around 7:30 or 7:40.
Are there any Bimmerfest veterans around here that have any suggestions for a smooth running caravan?
Are we going to try and meet the LA people somewhere or are we just going to caravan seperately?
LordGop
04-18-2004, 10:15 PM
I heard last year the LA people meet up at Balboa park as said above the only problem with TC and Ventura is that is a busy place there is a market and what not there Balboa park is a much less busy road and area and I think that is why it has been picked in the past.
Last year which caravans acutally meet up at Balboa park did the SD and OC people meet there or just the OC people? Someone who was at Balboa park last year really! needs to chime in.
If we want to get to the Fest by at least 10 then we would have to leave the park about 8:45 going 65mph....lets keep the ideas rolling we do have about a week to really get this nailed...keep it coming guys.

If we do Balboa park it should take us no longer then an hour to get from the OC meeting place to Encino. Yahoo maps says that it's an hour (at 65). That would put us in Encino at about 8:30-8:45 if we leave OC at 7:45.
I think you guys in LA should decide the best place since many of us in OC or SD don't really know the area that well.
Another good thing to have is two-way radios of some sort. http://shopper.cnet.com/Two-way_radios/4007-3502_9-0.html?tag=shfd.dir

Yea I think we should go with Balboa park I think it worked well for the people who meet up there last year... if everyone likes that we can move on to setting times up...so what does everyone think of Balboa park for the LA people?
Oh yea and two way radios really do help while on the drive and the road ralley at the fest. I would recommend Motorola's Talkabout....any of them will do but I recommend with tih sub channels, sometimes they are used and can help to stop you picking up all sorts of different radio conversations
Motorola 2 mile range ones (http://commerce.motorola.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/CategoryDisplay?cgrfnbr=8&cgmenbr=126)

I think OC is going to have to meet and leave sooner then, that is if SD and OC are meeting up with LA at Balboa park leaving earlier would have to be done. Plus a 15 min time window is a bit small. Uberpanzer was saying: "SD people have left at about 5-5:30am in the past" that would allow them to be at Balboa by 8 at the latest, since it takes about 2 hours 9 min to get there.
If OC is going to meet at that mall, I think you put a map up on, it will take you guys 50 min at 65 to get to Balboa Park. you would have to leave around 7, yea its early but hey look at the times the SD people leave at.
From Balboa it take about 1 hour 18 min to get to the fest (all time according to yahoo maps). We have to figure out what time is good for every one, the above suggests a 8 am leave from Balboa park to the fest.
People expressed a concern for getting to pick certain parking locations so they want to get there a bit early....unless there is more ideas how is this sounding?
Summary: With SD, OC and LA safely at Balboa park, Leave there at 8am and get to the Fest at about/around 9:20ish OR leave Balboa at 8:30ish am get to the Fest at 9:55ish/10am :dunno:
Which is it guys? need more replies to get the general ideas of what the Bimmer Festers want!
EDIT: (there is 2 replies I can notice above that lobby for leaving at 8)

I too have no problem leaving at 8am from Balboa Park in Encino (San Fernando Valley, LA County). If the San Diego caravan is getting up at 5am to trek to Santa Barbara then we shouldn't complain or leave later because then we'll get the crappy parking spots. So I vote for leaving at 8am sharp.

All right I'm convinced we should leave early so we don't get crummy parking spots. Especially with so many cars this year.
I think the OC Caravan should plan get there at 6:45 and then LEAVE (Barnes and Noble) around 7.
I think the LA Caravan should plan to get there at 7:45 and then LEAVE (Encino Park) around 8.

The OC caravan definately needs to meet at 6:30-6:45 and leave at the latest 7:00. I wonder if this caravan will be as huge as last year's. Last year the caravan was so large it could have been a show of its own! :yikes:

I will try and get up a summary of all the info reguarding the OC, SD, and LA caravans(and others as we heard about them), later today around maybe by the lastest 9pm or maybe 10pm. It will give us an idea of what meets where and at what times... The LA caravan is worked out and has a place and location this will all be in the summary. yada yada,
The only Caravan I have heard nothing except some suggest times from last year is the SD caravan, no location and the people coming from SD need to work this out on where you guys are going to meet.... But yea once the summary gets up we can have a clear picture of where everyone stands

The summary as I understand it presently is the following:
SD Caravan: No set time or location, only times from last year were mentioned (5:15 or 5:30AM??)
OC Caravan: Meeting at Huntington Beach mall in front of the Barnes and Noble at 6:30 departing at 7AM
LA Caravan: Meeting at Balboa Park, Encino at 7:30/7:45 and departing at 8AM
I think that is the general consensus and I also think that each caravan is going to meet up with the next caravan as we travel on the freeway (i.e. San Diego caravan will meet at Huntington mall and leave with the OC caravan at 7.
Then, that combined caravan will meet the LA caravan between 7:30 and 7:45 and leave at 8AM) Is this all correct guys?
I think the SD people should get started on setting up a location for their meeting place.
Also, does anyone have addresses/maps for each location so we can look them up on mapquest/yahoo maps?

Last year, the SD caravan left from the starbucks in the Carlsbad outlets stores off of Tamarack and the 5. We met at 5:15 and left at around 5:30 a.m. There were about 10 cars that started out and progressed to about 30 at OC and then 70 by the time we hit LA. (these are just rough estimates, probably more than that) Lots of fun and very fast drive. \

We are trying to time it to join up with the caravans already headed North from Los Angeles, etc. Also, there may be some "late-goers" driving up from the south, so they are more than welcome to join our slightly later departure time... I hope this map helps. See You There!

timers, if you can drive the car in OC and get into lots, you can get into the Balboa Park lot. Just go slow and at an angle!
As for the SD caravan, I will not be with you all this year. Going up Friday in a slow car. I know of a few SD OG people that are NOT planning anything since things were supposedly being taken care of on here, which is probably why NOBODY has stepped up with a firm SD plan. Last year's deal sounds good though. 5am meet at Starbuck's off Palomar Airport Rd at the Company Stores, departure should be 5:15 though so you all don't have to hurry (and can leave a bit later if you WANT to hurry). But this isn't really my call since I won't be up that early.....
An RSX can join if they want. But be aware that people in years past have NOT recognized that other cars are traveling with us. I have two friends that were constantly being cut off in an A4 and a 3G Eclipse since the BMW drivers didn't think they were in the caravan. Just be ready for it, and bring a FRS radio so you can tell people NOT to do it to you.
Good luck all! I'll be sleeping while you're all driving!

Yep I'm pretty sure everyone has a GMRS(General Mobile Radio Service)/FRS (Family Radio Service)Channels type of radio and that is also what I use. We'll have to see the general ability of peoples radios, some of the people who go to meets on a regular base maybe have some pretty niffy ones not sure if everyone has one that can go all the way to channel 11 but I'm not sure have to kind of see what people have in general?
uberpanzer
04-26-2004, 08:28 AM
....But this one goes to 11.....
Anyway, most good FRS radios go to 14, with like 32 subchannels a pop. But subchannels are sorta like a scrambler (easiest way to describe it) and take a bit to sync up once you psh the Talk button. It is better to NOT use the subcahnnels, unless there are way too many people around you using all the OTHER channels. This usually isn't a problem on drives, since we are out of an area too fast to really worry about people in houses (or Disneyland) talking to each other.

OK....I've been asked this by a few people in OC now.
WHO IS LEADING THE SD CARAVAN?
Most of the people that I know that have been in charge of these in the past are either going up on Friday, not sure if they are going, or are just sitting this one out all together. If I were not going up on Friday I would be leading it myself.
Is there anybody that wants to take charge of this? By the sound of it we need SOMEbody to. It doesn't matter if you've never done it before, we just need someone to actually tell everyone to mount up and get on the road once the time has come. Any takers?

Anyways, I'll be at the Starbucks at the Carlsbad Company Stores at 5:15 A.M. We'll leave at 5:30 and meet up with the OC caravan... and then the LA Caravan and then be at SB by 10 ish...
Carlsbad Company Stores is located at 5600 Paseo del Norte off interstate 5 between palomar airport road and canon road.
Please bring an FRS Radio with 14 Channels and subchannel capability. This allows communication during the caravan and is also useful during the big bimerfest afternoon drive through SB. They're relatively inexpensive and there's no need for the ghetto fab/ radio shack/ smokey and the bandit/ magnet mount CB that hasn't looked cool on a car since 1984.
