Since the event is a little later in the year, I'm thinking a camping expedition may be in order. Ok, so a couple of weeks later may not really be camping weather, but ya never know - we *are* talking about Santa Barbara now, aren't we?
Anyone from the area who may have worked at Cutter Motors and sold me 2 cars and has lived there for a long time who enjoys surfing and other outdoor activities have any advice for an outdoorsy type looking for a nice private camping area to bunk down at for a couple of nights? :D
I like a wooded setting without the "mall" feel if u get my drift. Carloads of screaming babies do not make a fun camping experience for me. I also like to stay up late with a camp fire and occasionally bark at the moon, so I don't want to disturb my neighbors either.

You have (2) excellent alternatives:
a) El Capitan State Beach / El Capitan Ranch
b) Refugio State Beach
El Cap has some excellent campgrounds, and so does Refugio.
You should remember Refugio from the BimmerFest Road Rally.
May 1st ususally is ideal camping time, btw.

You forgot to mention Lake Cachuma. I try to get an overflow spot as they are more remote and unimproved. you can fish, but not swim. At least that's the way it used to be.

Wife and I are camping nuts. Cheaper than $300 to stay in a hotel and we can use the $ on mods! lol

I definitely think that camping is the way to go this year.
In particular, the campgrounds at Refugio or El Cap.
In May everything is so green...
