Found this this morning while detailing my wife's X3. She doesn't remember hitting anything and there is no damage to the exterior or tire. It is on the driver's side front wheel-well. Any thoughts??

I was wondering if something chewed through it...we park it in our garage nightly...that isn't to say it couldn't happen though???

Looks like a Rat chewed it. If you've got rats there will be droppings. Might not have happened in your garage.

It does look like that, eh....wouldn't it take quite a while for a rat to do that? She does work 8 hour shifts where it is parked outside.

My friend just looked at the pics and said he had a similar situation where he lowered a car and the tire wore through the plastic. Based on the shape of the hole, it does kind of look like that is a possibility, but I haven't lowered or tinkered with the car at all. It is an 09 that we bought new.

I was gonna post the same thing. It looks like the tire rubs that spot at full lock...

I tried turning the wheel at different angles and checking...nothing. Could there be something wrong with the axle...loose etc? They are the stock tires.

It looks like first something caused the undertray to come loose - in pic 3 the part hanging down at bottom of frame. That was probably caused by something like that rod sticking out of the parking curb or after running over something.

Then once the undertray opened up and the car was on the highway, air was forced up under the car and hit the back of the plastic wheel liner. At highway speeds the liner started to buckle and rubbed on the tire. You can see in pic 3 burnt strings of plastic on the back side of the liner, and sharp cuts on the front of the liner in pic 2 caused by the tire.

If it was not air pushing on the back of the liner it could have been something you hit got jammed in there and caused the liner to rub. Then the object eventually came loose and fell out.

Definitely looks like grinding done by the tire.

Looks like the tire is rubbing against it for some reason

This sounds like the most reasonable to me too. The only thing I don't get is what she hit. She is very, very careful with the car...no pulling up on curbs or parking bumpers. It would almost have to be something she hit while driving...
