View Full Version : Front to back rotation?

I'm contemplating a track day but have this concern:
back tires will need to be replaced pretty soon, and a track day will finish them for certain. Now I don't mind killing them, so what do I do with the front tires which still have decent tread?
Rotate front (decent tread still) to back for the better grip for a RWD car but increasing understeer? (rotating front to back might not even be an option - dunno)
Drive as is so when you return just get 2 new rear tires?
Doesn't matter as you have to get 4 new tires anyway?
What's the expert advice?

There's a good chance you'll need four new tires by then, anyway. :p
Leave the good ones up front. You're going to wear the front tires a lot more than the rears and you don't want to risk cording tires at an event.

Agreed.

Why would the fronts wear more than the rear, esp in a RWD car?
What is cording? (Yes I did a search and only came up with 2 threads, with this being one of them).
I appreciate the help.

well the front tires will wear out extremely faster than the rear if the car has been lowered and improper alignment(failure to the proper toe adjustment).
but under the normal circumstance the rear tires should wear out faster for RWD cars.

At a driver's school, the constant HARD, HARD cornering and HARD braking will have more of an effect on your front tires. Unless you smoke your rear tires coming out of every corner and do burnout launches, your front tires will show a lot more wear. Think about it: Does your car accelerate faster or stop faster? I'll bet it stops faster. Add in the fact that a lot more weight goes to the front tires in a corner and you've got lots of wear.
And cording is when you wear the tread off and expose the internal belts of the tire. Needless to say, that's bad.

Yes, but track days are not normal circumstances.

Actually on every vehicle I have owned the fronts wear out before the rears.
If you are doing burnouts, then the back tires will wear out faster. But I don't consider THAT normal driving. SO actually my first car may have worn out the rears first, but a '55 Chevy with a big Buick V8 will tend to smoke the itres every so often. :)

...until now. The PZeros wore over twice as fast in the rear. In fact, I moved the fronts to the back just so I can get rid of the (crappy) tires. And I drive with DSC on, don't (can't) peel out, and don't go to the track.
