[Just returned from my local dealer.Put a deposit down on a new 6 I was told that if I didn't put down a deposit now I probably wouldn't be able to get one until next year.I had wanted to actually see and drive one before I ordered it but there isn't going to be any around till March. My salesman said that right now the 1st shipment is at the dock in N.J. but that BMW is holding them for a country wide unvieling sometime in March.I bought 6 different car mags with new 6 reviews and they all sound positive. I think this car looks awesome in some photos and questionable in others.I'm 12th on the list just to order one.Their allotment is 3 per month so my optimistic delivery date is August.(Black Saffire metalic, Red leather, premium sound, sports pkg, cold weather pkg  (my wife says I'm obsesed)Spelling ? :dunno: : This will be my 5th BMW coupe and I can't wait to drive it! :drive:

That's crazy! What about calling around some other dealers?

Are they asking over MSRP?

It's not, at least from what I've heard. From the local sales manager's my boss and I have spoken to, everyone has a pretty long list of waiters. We have about 15 "real" people waiting for coupes and convertibles (meaning, we've already gone through our list of orders dating back a few years to the first mention of an upcoming 6er, and confirmed with each customer that they were still interested, and taken off the few that have changed their minds since then).

Also, many dealers have made it know that they will likely let the market determine the price of the car. I'd be interested in seeing any dealer that has written a purchase order for this car that says "MSRP" anywhere on it, at least until the waiting lists are all satisfied.

What is an example of how a dealer would do this. Would they start with an arbitrary markup and see how many people bite? Or will they actually start taking bids.

I imagine it's a delicate situation. If you're first on the waiting list and the dealer comes back with MSRP + $10K, you might get pissed and avoid that dealership in the future (not good for the dealership). But at the same time, what if waiting list people #7, 9, and 12 are willing to pay that much. :dunno: Decisions, decisions.

The Dealer Principal, General Manager, GSM, or all of the above will probably have a good idea of what the market for the car is, and they will set a premium accordingly. By now, I'm sure many (most?) dealers have already determined what they'll be asking.

Also, there is nothing that says that the dealer has to charge everyone the same price. While they might try to do so, they might also give the guy that buys 5 cars a year from them a break if he wants a new 6. Also, if you are a good deal-maker, you can always work with the dealer and see what kind of a deal, if any, you can negociate for yourself below the normal going price.

from what I was told at BMW of manhattan, its the only dealership that is owned by BMW of NA, and as such is prohibited to charge over MSRP, even on hot cars like 6 or (before) Z8. Don't know if it is really true or not, but it may be a good choice for first few 6's.

I suppose you could tell the first person on the list that the price is 10k over, do they want it, and if not, they move to the back of the list, and proceed that way. Depending on how you're doing, you could raise or lower that price. Basically, the people most willing to pay over MSRP get theirs first. Not a consumer goodwill proposition, but if you're in it for a buck . . .
