I just bought my first BMW, a 1997 528i 5-speed. (Yes! I love it!!!) I've alway done virtually all the work on my cars, and since they have been either German or Japanese, I have a good inventory of metric wrenches, sockets, etc. However, I've seen references to 18mm and 16mm sizes in some of the BMW DIY stuff, which I've not encountered before (for the old air-cooled VW's you could do virtually everything with a 10, 13, or 15 mm wrench or socket :) .

So my question is what "special" size tools will I need to work on my new car; that is other than the normal 9-10-11-12-13-14-15-17-19mm, etc. stuff.

Thanks - John

I know there is a special tool for removing the clutch from the fan. Might be a good one to have. Probably only get it from BMW. If you need the part number just holler.

Get a 36mm socket (it's BIG) for oil filter removal. Also get a set of hex sockets, ranging from about 4mm to 12mm.

Torque wrench for wheel lugs (capable of setting to about 90 foot-pounds)

T-50 Torx socket if you ever plan to remove the front bumper.
