I am looking to do this exchange for my 02 X5(bulild 11/01) any tips would be greatly appreciated. I would ultimately like to do the XM direct connect.
Thanks

I am looking into this as well. From what I have found, you do not touch the "Head unit" up front. You just replace the radio in the trunk.

From there, it looks like you can purchase the XM Direct connect and blitzsafe adapter.

Before you do that, check out the recent complaints about XM SQ... they seem to have compressed the signal more.

I finally installed XM in my 1999 E39.

I have DSP and a CD changer.

First, I had to replace the cassette player with a CD player from a 2003 E39/X5. This requires a couple of adapters, all of which I purchased from Tom @ EAS.

Next, I purchased the XM direct kit, also from Tom @ EAS. This included the XM tuner, antenna and a Blitzsafe adapter. Since I have DSP, with a coaxial connection, I also need to purchase the Coax converter. Without it, you will not have sound on XM.

Easy installation. I have 18 XM presets, all of the Channel/Artist/Song information shows up in the MID and the instrument cluster.
