After seeing this weekend's forcast I am thinking of putting my summer tires on. I can ride out the odd chance of a storm here and there after 3/1. Im in the NY/NJ Metro area.
Since this is my first time using snows I wanted some feedback on when most people switch back.

Was just wondering the same thing the other day. (about my wife's car)

I switch back when the *average* high temperatures are starting to touch low 40's, for a week or so to the point where a freak late storm would quickly melt off.
However, I'm usually one of the first guys here who switch back since my commute to work is very short. Most guys around here wait it out a bit longer, normally mid to late March for us in northern Indiana.

Not till May. Let's not forget last year snowstorm in late April.
Even without snow, the roads (pothole fields) are too harsh for summers.
They won't fix them until at least late spring.

VERY good point. Especially if you're running very low profile tires, and your local roads have suffered this season (Hello east coast?). We've been suprisingly lucky in our area as far as potholes are concerned.

Mine are coming off about St Patrick's day.. I run the same size on the stock wheels, so pothole problems don't apply. Wow, Gary.. you really take them off early for South Bend, but I guess it is pretty flat up there. I'm in the Cincinnati area, and most around here wait for late March. Very hilly here.

The parking lot is visable from the sales area, so I get heat about it every spring from the other sales guys, in a joking way of course... "Hey Gary, sure hope it doesn't snow tonight!" :eeps:

I usually go with snows till early to mid April.
A bit long, but I've got a picture with the date 4/6/81 etched in the snow on the windshield of my then 1980 VW Rabbit. I think we had about 8 inches of snow that day here in CT.
So, ya' never know :dunno:

March 15th is the latest date I can remember us getting accumulating snow (on the roads) in the Philadelphia area within the last 10 years, so that's my standard date for switching back to summers.
Because of the nice weather, I'm tempted to switch earlier. However, I need new rear tires on my summer wheels and I don't want to have to buy them until after my driver's school May 1st-3rd.
Although it was tempting today, April 10. Burnt too many times. :tsk:

I just got 4 of these from Jordan at Tire Rack today. I was very tempted to put them on since it was in the high 40s and sunny. But I just know there'll be a freak snow storm next week as soon as I get summer rubber on. Here in Michigan it's best not to tempt fate.

For the past couple years, I've switched back in early or mid March. However, I always get caught in that last storm of the season (and couple minor snow squalls too.) But I took it slow (or is that took it snow?) and was okay.
This year, the roads survived the potholes pretty well. They are only the size of Texas (instead of the usual Alaska-sized craters.)
I will see how the next couple weeks pan out, and make my decision then. The thought of "burning up" my snow tires on dry and warming roads bugs me when I could have the summer tires back on, and gain back the full handling potential of my car.
The first really warm day after mid-April is a good time for me. I switch to summers and do my full spring detailing job at the same time.

I'll switch if the weather will be clear for more than a couple days.

Ahh, well, at least I got three weeks worth. Back to the snows for this storm.

I drove my wife's Ford Explorer today, what a mess this morning!!
My baby was washed and waxed last weekend and she's sitting in the warm and cozy garage with her summer wheels & tires.
Now, if I can just get my wife to let me drive her Explorer for a few more days until the roads are dry... I don't want to get my baby dirty.

Yep, my snows came off 3 days too early ( I took them off on Saturday). We are looking at 3 inches of snow on the ground and icy pavements. I got to work before it started, not sure how I'm getting home. I think this happened last year too on the week after I took my snows off. :(

I don't know what it's like in King of Prussia or north of that, but in Center City the roads are just wet and I hear sleet or rain on my window.
We drove the Passat today, so no worries for us even if it gets worse...

I never switched from summer tires. All three of our cars have been on summer tires all winter.

We drove the Passat today, so no worries for us even if it gets worse...Out in West Chester, we've had our side walk shovelers and parking lot plowers here twice. We had 3" up to about 15 mins ago when it finally switched to rain. Hopefully it stays raining long enough for me to get home.
The M3 kept it's summers on all winter long, but it sat in the garage anytime the weather got crappy and my wife and I carpooled. Now both cars have summers so we had no option but to get to work before the snow arrived and figure out a way home later.

Post that for us in the summer when you're sweltering w/ 110 degree heat and we're enjoying that weather.....
I want to be in Texas today.
