After 1.8k miles my NEW 550iGt alerted me on the cockpit display low engine oil-added a quart, but curious if others have needed to add engine oil with such low mileage-have owned x5 ,6 series and 7 series and never had to add oil before my yearly maintenance.

Check to see if the oil cap is loose. Mine was mysteriously loose last week.

Its not an unusual to have to top up on oil especially when new. Monitor your oil consumption for excessive/high consumption after topping off. It should level off around 5k to 6k miles.

BTW: I keep a bottle of Castrol (Synthetic) 5w-30 underneath the lower boot/hatch panel.

Thanks for the info. The owners manual is so ambiguous about the type and grade of oil. I thought it was full synthetic and knew it was Castrol but was torn betwen the 5W-30 and 5W-40. Since your weather and ours is pretty close, (except for the humidity!) I'll go with the 5W-30 as well.

dealer recommends 5w-30 and cost for a quart of bmw 5w-30 at parts dept $6.75-manual shows can also use castrol etc.

Go to the dealer, most will top off and give you a bottle to go

I had to add over 10 quarts in my first 12k miles so YMMV
