For the past few days I've been driving an X3 with about 2500 miles as a service loaner. I've noticed that when I back out my driveway in the mornings, and then put the gear shift into Drive and step on the gas, the engine will rev for a few seconds and then start moving. The first few times I thought I had accidentally put it in Neutral, but it's definitely in Drive. I've also noticed some rough shifts from 4th to 5th gear on the freeway. Anyone else observe these problems? For what it's worth, this is one of the demo vehicles which was delivered last November.

My X3 2.5 does not have this problem. The shifting on my tranny is very smooth. With no problems going from reverse to drive.

I don't know if the same parts were used in the demo X3s, or if the harsh treatment of all of those test drives has taken its toll.

I had the same problem and BMW service claim that there isn't any problem. After several notices, phone calls & visits they accepted that there is a major problem at tanny and wanted to change it. I asked for a total replacement with a brand new car. ( It hapens whent the motor is totaly cold. )

I have a 2002 X5 3.0 that is doing the same thing lately. is getting much colder up here in NJ and the problem is getting worse. You almost have to put it in gear and sit like a moron for a few whole seconds before hitting the gas to get a smooth take-off. I've even gotten a FEW 'shutters' at hard take-offs like a slip is happening. Anyone else getting this on the X5 3.0. Anyone heard of this? Some shifts are becoming rougher as well.

Same exact problem with my X5. 35,000 miles. Always get the "shudder" if I don't wait a second after going from reverse to drive. Dealer sez this is "normal", but I don't think so. Lease is up next month, so I'm not too worried about it, but I know that this is not the way it should be working.

WOW! Lots of bulletins. I guess we can say it is a 'normal' problem with the engagement from R to D or P to D but is it fixable? :thumbdwn:

I wonder if this is the same problem that e46 and X5's had about a year ago on the GM manufactured steptronics, namely delayed engagement of D on a cold start.

As I noted in an earlier post I have this same issue on my 2002 3.0. I just had my Ford Taurus company car towed this morning for tranny failure. I expect a problem from a FORD but not BMW! Anyone take their X in yet to get this problem fixed? Did it work?
