I have a 2011 528i. just had a small accident. I need to replace my front bumper.
what is required to up-grade to a m5 oem cover?

You'll have to at least wait for F10 M5 to arrive in the market and much more for the parts.

thanks for the input. I called my local dealer, they said that a "sport" version is avaiable now? what is needed to change from stock to the sport package?

You may have more luck asking this on the 5 series board, instead of the 5 GT board. But the 528 is available with an M Sport package, so any competent bodyshop should be able to order the M Sport bumper, though there's no guarantee your insurance company will play ball. The car may look a little silly if you don't do the M Sport rear diffuser at the same time, though.
