View Full Version : I assume this is BAD?

Changed out my wheels today, while I was under there I took a look at my front pass. strut. This is what I found! I assume that the white ring couldn't get that way by itself...it's "hooked" around a torn opening in the sleeve. Clearly not normal...but is this strut dead, or does the sleeve normally tear?

What concerns me is that I had the Inspection I done in October at the dealer and they didn't say anything was wrong with the struts at that time...and it looks to me like someone "hooked" the white collar on the sleeve, clearly too late to go back to the dealer at this point

Not any standard component I've ever seen.

I looked at the driver's side as well, which is also torn, and the white collar thing is around the shiny shaft of the strut, but seems to be fixed in place at the top of the strut. I think normally the sleeve/boot would cover it if it were not torn. I'm trying to figure out why it's crimped around the torn sleeve...

I think they are shipping blocks. When I changed the shocks on my M3, the left side had one, the right side did not.

The bump stop is up inside the boot.

If you have a 2001 330Ci then it should still be well within its warranty period. Your dealership should take care of this.

Do keep in mind, that the boot needs to have the entire front Mac Strut assembly remove to re-install. I would just take out the block and run it as is.

No danger from running a strut with a torn boot like that?

No, the boot is only there to keep excess dust and crud out of the strut mechanism.
