I'm looking to but an M3 in the next month and need some advice.

95 or 96-97?

I know the 95 has a 3.0 liter vs. the 3.2 liter in the later years, but is one a better engine than the other? I've seen the hp and torque specs already. Also I have noticed different Emissions on the '95.

Any pros? cons?

Were there improvements from 95 to the 96, not just engine but overall?

I guess maybe someone who has driven both...how would you compare the overall expirience?

Thanks

Depends on what you want to do.

The 96-97 has FAR better low end torque, but power really drops off at the top end of the rev range. It's a kick ass traffic engine, really.

The '95 revs higher, makes more power up high, and can be relatively easily tuned for more hp. It's *arguably* a little better for the track.

I'd say most '95 M3s have seen a lot of track time - since they are so tuneable, a lot of track junkies buy them. So keep that in mind when you're shopping. And if you're not gonna tune it, the 3.2L is better for you.

Also, I believe the '95 is more neutral handling - I think they changed the M3 in '96 or '97 to make it understeer more. Not just the staggered wheels ('95 is non staggered) but the suspension as well.
