On another forum, someone told me that treadwear ratings aren't absolute. That you could only compare treadwear ratings on tires from the same manufacturer. For instance, a 220 rating on Michelin wasn't necessarily the same as a 220 rating on a Bridgestone tire. That didn't seem to make much sense to me. What do you say?

This is correct.

Unfortunately the UTQG ratings have become more marketing than fact these days. It is true that they are only comparable within the same company, and that companies do play with the treadwear number part of the UTQG a bit.

No offense, but... eleven minutes to get a reply? What are you doing? Working?

Seriously.. thanks a lot. You are an invaluable resource. And your response time is incredible.

So those wear ratings are not based on any international standards?

Interesting...so somewhere in a tire companies marketing department, a couple of drones are working on a campain for a new tire and after throwing some darts at a board with numbers between 200 and 600..."Hey, wow, look at that? Our new high performance tire is going to have a 450 rating!...here, you try and see what you get" :tsk:

Definitely makes my job harder having less data... this has sort of occured over time, this inflating of UTQG numbers...
