Center of Steering Wheel - Vinyl or Leather Covered?

Tried doing a search on this but couldn't come up with any info.

Was wondering if the center piece of the steering wheel (airbag cover, part that moves when you push to honk the horn) is simply textured vinyl or leather covered? I ask this as I'm unsure if I should use Lexol Leather Conditioner or Vinylex to protect it. My car is exposed to a fair amount of heat and sun.

Usually they are vinyl as this material provides more 'support' for the air-bag

If leather, you would see some stitching. Most likely folded and glued/stapled vinyl.

Any thoughts on how I can repair the center cap on my 02 E39. I have tried Restore Black and I think it is too shiny. I haven't tried to peel the existing film off yet either. The center cap is integral with the airbag and can't be removed separately.
