I'm not that familiar with tires/wheels so please take that into consideration when reading this...
I'm looking to get a used 2001 BMW 325i but the latest one I looked at had everything I wanted but the sport package (for a really good price).
I don't really care about the suspension changes and was just wondering if I can still put 17x7 wheels on this car?
Do I also have to get the sport package tires -- i.e. change the current ones from 205/55 R16 to 225/45 R17 in order to support the 17" wheels?
Also, how often do you have to change the tires due to wear and tear?
Thanks for the help.

you'll need 225/45R17 to go w/ 17"x8" tires. anyways, w/ 17" rims (or any rims) you want the combination of width (205, 225, 235 etc) and aspect ratio (55, 50 , 45 etc) to calculate to match the oem wheel diameter including tires as much as possible. otherwise your speedometer/odo reading w/ be screwed.
fyi: :p ... you will need 17" tires to go w/ 17" rims. the 16" tires cannot be used on 17" rims.
tire wear depends on brand, wear rating, summer vs. all season, high perf vs. low perf. high perf summers have the fastest tire wear.

If you get 17" X 8" rims from a 325i sport, you will need 225/45-17. But, if you are just going for the look of 17", you can get 17" X 7" wheels off of a 330i non-sport, and use 205/50-17 tires.. A lot more selection in that size and cheaper too.. If going for the cosmetic upgrade (they may handle marginally better than 16"), then I'd say that is the way to go. There are a LOT more choices in that size, if you are going with all-season tires.
