While I tend to say bimmer, I grew up in California (where most of them are sold) and I've always heard beemer and bimmer used as synonyms. Friends, family, strangers all use the terms to refer to BMW cars. I hate when ignorant people order rice wine and say Saw-key instead of the correct sa-ke. Deal with it.
Deal with it.dude, i was half-joking (guess i used the wrong smiley-face). calm down.
....i don't like the way either sounds, i just say "BMW"

am I the only one who thinks bimmer sounds totally cheesy and stupid??? Beemer sounds the best because of the B sound in BMW, I think it's most closely related to BMW :dunno: just my $.02

I agree. I've never heard people use Bimmer outside US.

No. It's a pretty lame debate. BUt considering that bimmer was used basically since beemer was already taken for motorcycles, it's an even lamer reason for adhering to the distinction. They're all made by BMW; why do the two have to be different? And, if they are, calling out someone's error is about as interesting as the wine snob at the party telling you that the red wine you're drinking has a wonderful boquet, delicious cherry notes, and a long, tannic finish. Egad, just drive. Or drink. (but not both, of course)

So, because a bunch on unenlightened people do it that makes it ok? :dunno:
These are probably the same BMW drivers that wont move out of the left lane when someone is trying to pass.

Europeans seem to call them "BM" or "Bem" - I think I heard the latter in France. I think Bimmer sounds strange, personally.

Unenlightened? Uh, I'd say these the consumers. Like it or not, the people buying the car call it a Beemer.
As I said, most americans incorrectly say saw-key when they order sake. It could annoy me everytime i'm in a sushi place (about once a week) or I could just accept that these are the same people that got irregardless accepted into the dictionary as a synonym for regardless. Or even worse, reverse discrimination - even though what they mean is discrimination.

Beemer refers to the motorcycles and Bimmer refers to the autos and Europeans don't use either. "B" is pronounced "bey" in German...so maybe it should be beymer? The bikers like their little distinction.
