At least its not in my BMW. My Honda Odyssey has an interesting problem that I can't figure out. I think I've narrowed it down to either struts, tires, steering linkage, or bearings, but I'd like to tap some of the infinite wisdom of the board.

Here are the symptoms on my '99 Odyssey with 70k miles. Between 70 - 80 mph, my steering wheel shakes like the wheels are out of balance. In addition, you can feel the vibration throughout the van. Sounds like simple wheel balance problem right, but it's not consistent. When I've had wheel balancing problems in the past, I could dial-in maximum shake consistently at a specific speed. Sometimes, the van runs smooth at a specific speed and sometimes it shakes; its not consistent.

The van does not feel loose and there is not excessive play in the steering linkage. I can rule out warn steering components with simple inspection. I can also rule out wheel bearings by determining wheel play, and there is not the typical wheel bearing roar sound.

I suspect I either have bad struts or I have tires whose belts are separating. Problem is, I don't want to spend money on struts and it turn out to be the tires, or vice versa. Your ideas are needed.

I have a similar problem in my M6, and I think it's a tire issue also. My old Mitsu also had this problem (but it didn't go away above a certain speed; only got worse) and at turned out to be out-of-true rotors AND out-of-balance tires.

I had the tires replaced on a Volvo XC70 that I used to own. The car shook at highway speeds from day 1. It was out of round tires also -- the dealer told me that some of the ocean transporters were tightening the cars down too much and it was warping the belts in the tires.

I've had that happen as well on some of my past cars . . . I am guessing you had the tires put on a hunter 9700 balancer and that is how you determined the tires were out of balance.
