Nate,

You, too, can be your own all-encompassing electro artist. Just go to www.propellerheads.com and download the "Reason" demo program.

Or, try Albleton's "Live" (not sure of the url, do a google of "ableton")

These are the two mainstays the "electro" artists use. Lots of loops and time stretching available with this software; you don't even have to have any musical talent to operate it, just a laptop computer and time to kill.

With "live", you just drag and drop pre-recorded "loops" of drums, bass lines, synth effects etc. into a virtual "mixer". You can stop, start, change sounds mid stream.

"Reason" takes a bit more effort, it's aimed at the geek-inclined.

The above programs are cross-platform, but on the PC side, there's a program called "Acid", it's the oldest of the lot having been around since the late 90's. It's a lot like "Live".

Hey Leftside,

I did all the edits, mixing and additional synths on a cd of turntable scratchin' this past summer. It was really cool.

I did it for a production company that specializes in production music cd's.

I never met the artist, but he was quite adept at scratching vinyl.

Neat stuff.

My job was to make him sound better.

That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard, scratching takes finnesse and more practice than you could possibly handle.

To the most musically and spelling impaired Mr. Leftside

As far as my statement concerning Scratching “that is a skill that really doesn't need any practicing” was indeed a double edge sword so to speak.
First off I own quite a few highly sought after vinyl records that were pressed before you were born in my 1500 + Pristine Vinyl record collection. I am sure you are fully aware (or are you?) the care one must take to keep them in this continual state.
Second off trying to convince anyone with an above room temperature IQ, and I quote,” scratching takes finesse and more practice than you could possibly handle” is really a joke all unto itself.
I don’t debate the artistic form of electronic Music as I own a highly sought after first pressing of the legendary technopop group Kraftwork that was brought back directly after it’s release in Germany by aunt in 1974. Also as far s EDM (Electronic Dance Music) being a true form of music I doubt it.
EDM as you call it Mr. Leftside is a hybrid at best and even in it’s current popularity there is no way it comes close to the beautiful and sultry “BOLERO” or as powerful as Beethoven’s “5th” or as sensual as “Wild Horses” as wicked as “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” as cerebral as “The WALL” as intoxicating as “ Sweet Jane” or as idealistic as “Imagine”…but I understated…the music is yours…it is of your ears, of your soul…it is after all a sensorial experience…it in reality is a combination of all these experiences that create these indescribable sensations which separates us from other life forms ( remember , “ words at best are the worst form of communication.”)
So in closing remember,
“ROCK N’ ROLL IS BETTER THAN MUSIC” ;)

And Don’t and I repeat Don’t Scratch the VINYL!

Turntables rock !

Nothing beats a Technics 1210 :D

I just won a Thorens TD160 on Ebay for 132 bucks!!!!

I'm SO excited.

When I was in college in the 70's, a Thorens was a wet dream, now they can be had, some thirty years later, at bargain basement prices.

And they're great; even better than some of those boutique brands out there today.

Nothing beats a simple, high end, no frills, fully manual belt drive turntable for snotty home use. I'd agree, however, the direct drive Technic 1200's are the bees knees for DJ and scratching work. Sturdy turntables are these. I may get one yet if I ever decide to incorporate this into my own sound.

Enjoy "Live".

Well, yeah, that too.....;) I don't know, Ed... All this comity, good will, and generally friendly behavior and people might think we actually like each other or something.

I'm becoming increasingly fearful that the movie Deep Impact was in fact some sort of premonition, given the level of sincere buddy-talk we're engaging in. I'm worried that we've "crossed the streams" a la Ghost Busters or something. Action must be taken...

Ed, you're an unqualifed moronic boob that can't even find his own butt to wipe after squeezing a coily.

I'm fairly certain in real life we'd get along just peachy.

I sure wish I was going along to the "fest this year. I'm always too busy lately. A good thing of course, but work has been very demanding. So, yeah, I'm jealous, sounds like tons of fun.

I'd like to do the cross-country drive as Terry has done. I did it three times in the 80's and once in the mid 90's. It's time.

One day, I'll get back out there.

Now, if you're ever back east.....

I'm fairly certain in real life we'd get along just peachy. In all seriousness, Ed, FWIW, I do like you :) To me the political mano-a-mano is a rather trivial diversion compared to meaningful things in life. You're a BMW enthusiast, with a good sense of humor -- that get's you started on the friend-o-meter already quite far up the scale. Now, if you're ever back east.....

STAY AWAY!!! (kidding of course). You know I'll be :drink: with a bunch of you communists :p when I'm out there for one reason or another, and we'll have a great time. Can't say when it might happen, and maybe we'll see you out this way first (next year's fest?)... regardless, there's plenty of good will and common ground on which to par-tay and have a good time.
