Hi there, I have started to notice a knocking noise when I drive on uneven roads. The noise seems to be coming from the passenger side front or rear but I don't know what it could be. Is there common faults for the E53 model, 4.4is. I was thinking maybe track rod ends but I don't know. Any ideas??
Try the sway / link bar, this is a common fault, jack up the car and remove the road wheel, pull the link bar up and down and you should see movement / play between the link bar and anti roll bar, a common knock problem results in the link bar needing replaced, normal price for a good quality link bar from ebay & -£10 quid,,if you need to replace try and find a quinten hazel or lockwood type
You may also want to check your Strut mounts on both sides. Its a very cheap and easy do it your self job. Maybe $30 each side. They would be the first place Id start if you have 100k miles
I would rule out a strut mount at this stage for several reasons, on a normal drive you would notice if the mount was defective, and not just on uneven ground, you would have an erratic steering issue with camber wear on the tyre shoulder and ther knocking noise would resemble a clunk more than a knock, a defective strut mount is serious as it can cause tyre blowout
