I just recently ordered my first M3. I'm trading in my ZHP for it. I'm dying to get it. I can't believe that I'm actually going to have an M3. :)
Well I have been told that the car would be built in the first May production run and I was wondering if anyone one else who had recently ordered (and is in the tracking process) or had recently taken delivery of an M3 could give me an approximation on the time from production to the shores of the US? Am I being optimistic in thinking it is a 6-8 week process? I forget how long it took to get my ZHP. :dunno:

it's 6-8 weeks if you're status 111/112 now.

I just order my M3 (I'm EXCITED!) on April 24th. I was told 8-12 weeks. Which is normal I hear, so I should expect it in July sometime. It's almost been 2 weeks since I've ordered and its going by fast!

that means you've got a production date assigned. Ask your dealer what your status is. Specify that you want the code. (If they don't have a code for you, it'll be at least 3 months.)

Status 111 means "On Order".
Status 112 means "Scheduled for Production". Once the car reaches 112, no changes can be made.

Sure. The approximation would be 0 months, 0 weeks, 0 days and 0 hours. The car is produced in the US...

Wait, if I am wrong I do apologize and am going to spank my own a** 20 times, but I was always under the impression that M3s sold in the US are assembled in Spartanburg (along with X5s and Z4s) :dunno:

M3's are definitely NOT made in the U.S. I didn't know about the Z4's but X5's are made in SC. I also spoke to a dealer here in AZ today and in a quick 5 minute conversation (I was running between meetings and thought I'd just pop in) he told me that if I ordered in the next week my car would be built in June and I'd likely have it by the first week in August. Also, since he quickly got the impression that I was educated on M3's (I mentioned the Individual Program and that I was interested in special leather, I also mentioned that I'd be ordering the car and not taking one off the lot thus no holding cost/insurance cost for him) he was already talking about $500 below MSRP. That was within 5 minutes and after he already knew I wasn't going to do anything today. I think I could probably get him to move another $500 - $1000 below. I'll let you know.

Production and delivery times.
Once you get a production date, which is actually the date of the Friday the week the car is scheduled to be finished, then you can start conting. But realize that you r production date is NOT etched in stone, unless you do a Performance Center Dleivery (search on that and see what you should have done).
The car is then put on a train to the port, whcih takes a couple of days.
Then it sits in port until a boat to the rith part of the country is loaded. This can take a few days to 3 weeks and rarely longer. BTW PC Dleivery cars can jump your car at the port and get here earlier, even after being built later. Mine did.
Then the boat sails to the US. About 10 days to the East coast, 15 - 20 days to the West coast.
Then it is serviced at the VPC. This includes chaing the oil, fixing any little dents and dings I may have picked up and cleaning off much of the cosmoline. This takes from a few days to 3 weeks depending on how many cars to do, and how much work they have to do.
Then the car waits for a truck going the right direction, another few day.
The the truck takes it to your dealer. A day to a few days, less than a week for sure.
Then the dealer calls you and set sup your delivery.
On the other hand, if you did a PC Delivery, you would have negotiated yoru delivery date and already know exactly (set in stone) your delivery date. My car was 58 days (8 weeks plus two days ) from order placed to delivery.

Oh, and X5s and Z4s are both produced at Spartenburg for the entire world.
M3s are only made in Regensburg, Germany. Normal 3 series can be made in one of several palces, including South Africa and China (soon if not already). X3s are made in Austria.

My car was originally a may build for delivery in early July, but apparently the guy ahead of me canceled and I became an April build. The car is on a boat and should be on the west coast the last week in May with a 1st/2nd week of June delivery
