But the 11 seconds he's talking about must be for the 116i version. The 316i is going from 0 to 60mph just under 11 seconds too. The accelaration figures won't play a big role in the sales.

And I bet, the 120d will be the best-seller 1-Series.

Hey, at least BMW no longer makes a 518i (yes, a 518i).

hmm, 6-series roundel trunk handle? LEDs under the door handle?

Yikes. VW Microbuses would pass those on onramps.

LEDs under the door handle?

What's the point of that?

Why didn't they show the iDrive option? :dunno:

Wow, scathing. Some truth to what he says, though.

BTW, how long will it be? In the neighborhood of 166"?

Ever try to open the handle (on a dark colored car) in pitch black darkness?

Hmm, I see. So when you unlock the doors by remote, the LEDs light up so you can more easily locate the handles?

That seems a little pointless, though. If the interior lights come on when you unlock, you can easily see the handle, no matter how dark it is.

ARGH!!! Quit teasing us Americans!!!!!! :p

BTW, they said the 120d will do 0-60 in 7.9. So that is the weapon of choice for people not wanting to get embarassed by a Scion...hahaha... :eeps: (umm...if they have that in Europe...)

My parents' Mitsu Diamantes (they have 2) have lit door keyholes. Pull on the (locked) handles, and they light up so you can put the key in (no remote).

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. It's a little redundant if you have a remote and the interior lighting. I don't mind, but just saying...

The Top Gear preview is terribly unfair.
It says that the car does 0-60 in 11 seconds, but that's for the bottom of the range 1er.
When someone rates an E-Class Mercedes, do they judge the entire range by the performance of the E200? NO! Stupid limies.

And the 1 series is a beautiful car, definately not ugly!

Indeed - and I didn't hear them quoting the 0-62 mph times of the 116i's rivals. 13 sec, 12, sec, 15 sec, 14 sec...

Clarkson can certainly be classified as being a daft Pom - he has long disliked BMWs and their drivers. Well, unless BMW has lent him a car for the week, in which case they're the best thing since sliced bread. You can bet he will evangelise on the 120d when he realises how quick (and so free!) it is.

See the other thread about the Mazda3. Then click here for the Car and Driver test:

They got a 0-60 of 7.4. I can hear it now... "But but.. It's front wheel drive!!!"

That's very good; FWD probably isn't an issue at these power levels, given the fat tyres which appear as standard these days. 0-62.5 mph (0-100 km/h) in 7.9 sec is the equivalent of 7.5-7.6 sec to 60 mph. Would the arguable 0.2-0.3 sec difference be worth giving away 251 lb-ft, monster in-gear poke and 15 mpg?

Interesting that the Mazda3 tested has a 2.3 litre engine. The biggest engine available in 1-series territory has a 2 litre, and has only adequate performance.

Over here in the states, you can *only* get the 2.3L engine in the 5-door version of a Mazda3. They do sell a 2.0L engine in the sedan with something like 15 less hp. Even with petrol at an expensive (by Yank standards) $2.50/gallon (about £0.37/litre at today's exchange rates), there still isn't too much incentive to go diesel or use a smaller engine. Diesel engines in small cars here are almost unthinkable, although that may change within a few years as fuel prices continue to rise and low-sulphur fuel becomes available. The high sulphur content (up til now) in US diesel fuels pretty much eliminated their possible use due to our strict emission guidelines.

I've driven the MZ3 5-door 2.3 and it's very impressive for a small car. The engine is extremely smooth for a 4-banger. You can barely feel it idle. It uses counterrotating balance shafts (the 2.0 does not, interestingly enough).

Is that 2.3 is the same as the one in the Mazda6? That car gets cracking reviews over here...

Has anyone seen the rest of the Top Gear review? Cause CAR and EVO loved the 1 series, so Top Gear may also love it, hard to tell from that clip.

I drove the Mazda 3 5 door, very nice - refined, comfortable, very roomy, decent controls. I wouldn't say it's that sporty though - the old MazdaSpeed Protege was a lot more sporty. Still, since Honda has dropped the ball this decade, Mazda is the place to go for economical sporty front drivers.

Um, VW sells out its TDIs every year. There is a market for small diesel cars in the USA. VW is currently the only company giving buyers that option. And on vortex you'll find diesel tuners who get performance and economy out of their cars.

You can't buy a Jetta TDI in California or any state that adheres to CA's emission standards.
