Attended the Mercedes C-Spot Drive Party yesterday in St. Louis. Overall it was a very nice event and my wife and I enjoyed it.

OVER ALL IMPRESSION: The food was good, though a little foo-foo-y gormet for my tastes. The crowds were not bad the longer we were there; an advantage of taking the 2-4pm time slot and wanting to drive EVERY car. The staff were very helpful an nice. This was the first time I had ever seen a Porta-Jon trailer with real oak trim and fake marble panneling! (much nicer looking than the one in my house) The "Center" stage car was a C230 Kompressor with a 6-Speed  . The 4-matic demo on the roller ramps where one wheel pulled the car was impressive even though Merc isn't the only one with this capability, I had never seen it in action.

The test course was tough, with some rather interesting turns, one of which was barely the width of the car :yikes: . My wife claims I hit a cone, but could produce no evidence... :D Sadly though it was pretty short and limited speeds to around 45mph at most.

Enough of that garbage...on to the important stuff...the CARS!

C32 AMG: Was driven on a seperate course by a "professional" driver (I think they were salesmen and other employees who had been to several driving schools). It was the first time I had ever been on board in a car with a trained driver and found it pretty entertaining. The car was quick, with great brakes and an amazing exhaust note. While it stuck to the track well (PS2's helped I am sure), I found the body role dissapointing.

NO STICK AVAILABLE!!! :tsk:

Now from order of least to most enjoyable driving experience (IMO) are the cars I drove...

C240 4-Matic Wagon (driven by wife):

C240 Wagon:  Forgot to put the transmission in "manual mode" at the start. Mashed the throttle at the start...foot hit carpet...hello *tap* *tap* is this thing on...the shift hit just as I arrived at the first turn :tsk: felt like it started in second!

C320 Sedan

C320 Sport Sedan: Fairly fun, power came on quick and easy, grip (once again on PS2's) was good, but I was not fond of the body roll. Steering was pretty quick, but it was rather numb and you could feel the boost in the tight bits.

C230 Kompressor Sport Sedan: The most entertaining of the lot. Power came on much quicker than the 320 (IMO) and the ride felt stiffer with less body roll. While it only has 189hp, I bet it could be pretty entertaining with a stick. I was told the suspension between it at the C320 Sport were the same, I was not convinced. Maybe its the weight difference... :dunno:

Bottom line it was fun, most people drove like the elderly but myself and a couple others there made up for that. :D

Oh...don't worry, I won't be trading in my Bimmer any time soon. I would still take my '99 323i SP over any of those cars any day...

I find it interesting that you ranked the 230K over the 320. Most people are not all that fond of the 1.8T in that car.

The weights listed on MBUSA:

230k - 3,250 lb
320 - 3,430 lb

Both of these weights are for the manual transmission cars. You think you can feel much of a difference in the handling of the two :dunno: .

I was only speculating it was the weight. All of the cars were autos. The C320 Sport was the first car I drove. The C230K was mid-pack.

The feelings were pure seat-of-the-pants, but in the sweaper and the tight S-turns, the 230K seemed to have a flatter stance and be more lively on its feet. :dunno:

I was talking about the interior decore! :D I found it interesting to find a set up like that which appeared as nice as something you would find in a really nice resraunt, yet was portable. Much nicer than I had expected.

Maybe I am wierd...

Thanks for the review!

Some of my friends say that the C230 handles really well. Is that true?

I personally liked the fridge with the built in tv.

I noticed the same. In fact, to me it out handled the C320 sport. The Mercedes reps there told me that the suspensions on the two were the same. I then thought it was possible the weight difference between the two engines, but as was posted earlier in this thread, the difference is marginal. If what the Mercedes people are saying is true, I have no idea as to what the difference was :dunno: The test track was very tight and short. I would love to take them out on either a longer slightly more open track, or a long road test back to back again.

The interesting part to see, was as you were standing in line to drive, the C230 line was every bit as long as the C320 Sport Coupe and Sport Sedan, yet most of the "enthusiasts" in the crowd were in line for the 230 :eeps:

I'm going in a couple weeks. Taking a friend who's an MB guy all the way. I tried to get him to go to the X3 test drive event but he flaked when I said we would get to drive fast. His response "aren't you afraid those things are gonna flip over?"

I'll definitely have to make up for his MB driving style.

You'll probably get some smiles from the staff. I made a point to hear the Mercedes exhaust note from each car I drove. Tire squeals is also a bonus, but hard to do with PS2's on a tight short track.

While at the wheel of the C230, the guy at the start gate looked at the C240 4-matic, then at me, back to the C240 who still hadn't made it out of the first S's, rolled his eyes and said "I'm going to have to give you a little more distance behind her" with a big smile on his face :D
