So after renting cars for biz travel hundreds and hundreds of times, I finally had an accident, a minor fender run-in between my rented GMC Yukon and a concrete pillar in a parking garage.
I always decline the rental car company's insurance, knowing that if something were to happen I'd file a claim against my personal auto insurance, and that my American Express gold card provides rental insurance that picks up any out of pocket balance left (including the deductible) after my auto insurance.
I carry a relatively high deductible ($1000), so I was pretty sure this claim would fall well below that threshhold and the entire claim would be covered by AMEX. The total bill came to less than $300.
I just got off the phone with AMEX, and I'm shocked to find out that they are denying the claim because it's a full-size SUV, and they are specifically excluded from coverage. I guess that sometimes there is some important information in those real fine print policies they throw in with the bill every year or so.
The worst thing is, I never pay for full size cars. I rent midsized and get upgraded because of the number of rentals we do. Oh well, there's no such thing as a free lunch.
