Awful headline and teaser ("Austrian winemakers in the Wachau region have turned scandal into opportunity.") but good article

DÜRNSTEIN, AUSTRIA — In the universe of wine, there is an Old World and a New World. And then there is Austria.

True, Austria is right in the center of Old Europe, and wine has been made here for millennia. The Celts are thought to have planted the first vineyards around this village and others in the Wachau region, about 100 kilometers, or 60 miles, upstream along the Danube from Vienna.

Until the 1980s, however, there was not much of a fine-wine culture. The fame of the Wachau, the best-known wine region in Austria, had more to do with the beauty of its terraced, hillside vineyards and the romantic legends attached to the ruined castles that cling to them.
