Williams link up with Intelsat.

Tue 01 Jun, 6:14 PM
The BMW WilliamsF1 Team today confirmed a new commercial partnership with Intelsat, one of the world's leading global satellite operators

The promotional partner agreement will enable the BMW WilliamsF1 Team to enhance its mission-critical reliance on the fast, accurate and secure transmission of data to and from race tracks around the world utilising Intelsat's network of 29 global satellites.

The dependability of Intelsat's technical infrastructure has been one of the key merit factors in the partnership with the BMW WilliamsF1 Team. The team is extremely reliant on the quick and complete transfer of data from test sessions and race weekends around the world to its two technical centres in Oxford, UK, and Munich, Germany. Race cars generate an ever-increasing volume and complexity of data, which when sifted for competitive advantage, can provide major steps in improving performance.

While many of the team's data analysts are in situ at tests or races, satellite data transfer to remote headquarters allows for more detailed analysis and comparison. For the 2004 season, The BMW WilliamsF1 Team has already transferred approaching 80Gb of data by satellite after seven Grand Prix and 15 overseas test sessions.

On the announcement of the partnership, BMW WilliamsF1 team principal, Frank Williams said: "I am delighted that the BMW WilliamsF1 Team will benefit from the vast competence of Intelsat who have supported some seminal events in history. Not only is it a privilege to have the endorsement of such a pedigree brand, but self-evidently, Intelsat will make a real contribution to our on-track performance."

Ramu Potarazu, COO, Intelsat Ltd, added: "The BMW WilliamsF1 Team need now only use one provider, Intelsat, for its European races, supplying it with a robust but simple solution that gives the team constant access to the mission critical information it needs to win races. Having the chance to work with the BMW WilliamsF1 Team gives Intelsat the opportunity to partner with a top quality organisation and provide a winning technology formula to support the overall success of the team."

Hacking data in F1 wouldn't be anything new.
