my 02 two codes, seem to be unrelated to one another but IDK
p0420 which is catalyst deficiency bank 1
p0492 secondary air system bank bank 2 IIRC
They both came up, went away on their own over 2 months ago, then just came back after 2-3K of driving
i've looked up the secondary air system problems, ill look around again but last time i looked around in there (around the same time the codes popped up before) it didnt appear that any of the hoses were ruined or anything and from an 02 with 136K on it i wouldnt doubt the ports being clogged and tbh i'd bypass the secondary air before i pay 10K to clean the ports ;)
but does the p0420 mean I need a new cat? could it be o2 sensors on bank 1? :dunno:

How about checking you spark plug tubes make sure your not getting oil in the tubes! If you are could be a sign for the codes I started getting those codes when my tubes were bad!

What side is bank 1? When i changed the spark plugs, back in january, there was small amounts of oil on the old plugs & coil boots on the driver side, nothing at all on the passenger side

Passenger side is bank 1, & that code sounds like cats gone bad.

I would start by changing spark plug tubes all 8 & while your at it might as well do valve cover gaskets because all that has to come off! Kinda tricky to do but with patience it manageable! No oil should be in those tubes that oil alone will kick off dumb codes! I speak of experience in the learnings I've gotten off this forum!

If you are indeed getting an error with the secondary air system bank 2, and not BOTH bank 1 and 2, then you likely have a stuck check valve at the rear of the driver's head. Be careful not to crack the pipes leading from the secondary air pump to the check valves or you'll be getting faults for both banks.

I'll check them, is it possible to check them before taking them out? like using a mechanic stethoscope or some such to hear if the valve is operating properly? This use to happen on my old 97 e420's MOT valve and i use to just unhook the hose, spray MAF cleaner in it and/or wrap it a couple times with a screw driver handle and it would be fine for months until it got fouled up again, lol.

I'll try and look on the passenger side and see if there is oil on that side now, but like i said when i changed the plugs in jan it was on the driver's side only but who knows at this age and mileage.

So far the codes havent popped back up, which is what I am waiting for before i even make the decision of replacing something as expensive as Cats. In the mean time i guess im just going to poke around in there abit and see what I can find.

I suppose you could rig up something (maybe with an air compressor) to blow air through the pipe at the front of the engine and see if you get a click at the check valves when you pressurize or depressurize the pipes leading to them...maybe even unstick a stuck one...dunno.

My Fan is on so IDK wth is up with that. But that Cat deficiency popped back up, these are the only two codes that came up. So even IF i replace the cat on that side now the fear of replacing the cat and the code still popping up is the only thing I have left i guess :dunno:
I will post the eventual outcome of this
