I've had an issue with a coolant smell for over a year..It only happened when i was at a stop on an incline...changed thermostat already- Now it's happening all the time except when the a/c is on and no check engine light at all- I've seen it "smoking" from the under the hood passenger side towards rear ...Any thoughts please....
Is the coolant low in the coolant reservoir?
coolant smell and the smoke (coolant burning off on hot engine/exhaust manifold??) indicate there is definitely a coolant leak.
You will have to open the hood and look when the engine is hot; use a flashlight, if necessary.

Check your coolant expansion tank for leaks underneath - its a known problem in older e60's. Check hoses too.
