I was looking under the dash on the drivers side tonight and saw a hole that looked like it took a key. I pulled the metal key blade out of the key fob and inserted it in the hole. I turned the key a a ribbon dropped out that was attached to a lever. When I pulled the lever the car went into neutral without the engine being started. I have never seen anything posted on this and thought I would share.

There was a member here about a week ago asking could he put his car in neutral without starting and I said I don't think so. Well based on what I found tonight I was wrong.

This is great news! I had to get my vehicle towed a couple weeks ago and they didn't bring a bed like I asked(hailstorm).

I read it when I got the car 4 years ago but will check it out again. I thought I was pretty versed between this forum and working on it myself but I missed this one.

Pulling on the lever puts it in neutral. Releasing the lever puts it back in park.

This has been posted before, I thought folk knew. Its great that its being posted again for those who still may not have known. I had to find it one night a few years ago late at night on a dark back woods road. It should be much easier though. The average person might panic in situations like that.

My 06 750Li i was able to put into neutral without the engine being started by moving the gear selector.

The ribbon method is necessary when there is absolutely no electrical power.

Just as a heads up, the transmission logs fault 507D when you pull the emergency release, parking gear failure to engage, I think it's called. Just so your not alarmed if your reading codes after doing this. I.e. having to release to be towed due to engine malfunction and you hook it up to the diagnostics etc....

Car overheated severely bursting a coolant line and dont know if there is any other damage to the engine at this point but the bmw roadside assistant and I couldnt figure out how to get it in neutral. One quick google search and this post came up and had it in neutral to get the car on the truck.

Sorry to hear that man. This cooling system is a doozy. Good news is that the head gaskets on the n62 are pretty good so i dont think youll have a problem there. Time will tell though. Its because they use cheap cracks over the years plastic parts in the ys and ts of the system and where the rubber connects to the quick connect coupling. This is why every hose and component of the cooling system needs to be replaced every five years orso

True other than your time you arent going to lose out on much else.
Just imagine this happening out of cpo or factory warranty
