So one day last week I was driving in 105 degree heat (Indianapolis) and my car was fine. The next morning I was driving to work in 84 degree weather and my engine overheating notification comes on while I was sitting in traffic. Once the car started moving the warning disappeared. It happened three times so I called the Stealer.

They told me to bring the car in right away so I popped the hood while driving on inner-city streets so the rush of air would cool the engine while I was driving. I slowed to all stoplights in attempts to not completely stop the car. Worked great, I didn't get the warning the entire way. Turns out my suspicions were correct. The auxiliary engine fan had died. Pretty serious situation in the heat we've had lately. Fortunately I have my 50 dollar deductible via CPO. They've had my car since Friday (today is Tuesday) because they had to order the fan.

In the meantime they gave me a 2012 328xi loaner. Nice car but I want my 550i back! Anyway, just giving anyone out there who may have my symptoms some idea about what's going on if you experience this unfortunate situation. My car only has 60k miles on it. I find it odd that a fan would die this early in the car's life. Seems unheard of.

For my car the fan died at less than 40k mi.

Yeah, things can break. It's not a Toyota. 78k and no broken fans or overheating here.

I looked in realoem and they sell whole thing in one assym, shround and fan. I guess you can't buy just fan All assy is cost 620 bucks. It's not cheap at all.

That sounds like a perfect salvage yard item.

Well then I'm glad I was under CPO. They replaced the main engine fan. Everything around it looks new.

I am curious about the 550s. Is there a fan on the engine in addition to the auxiliary fan or do 550s only have the auxiliary fan. My 545 only has the electric auxiliary fan. I don't have a fan on the water pump like my old e39 528 6 cyl. I really think this is a horrible design. I like having the all alum radiator vs. what my e39 had though. Perhaps BMW thought this was was a better trade off.
