So one day last week I was driving in 105 degree heat (Indianapolis) and my car was fine. The next morning I was driving to work in 84 degree weather and my engine overheating notification comes on while I was sitting in traffic. Once the car started moving the warning disappeared. It happened three times so I called the Stealer.
They told me to bring the car in right away so I popped the hood while driving on inner-city streets so the rush of air would cool the engine while I was driving. I slowed to all stoplights in attempts to not completely stop the car. Worked great, I didn't get the warning the entire way. Turns out my suspicions were correct. The auxiliary engine fan had died. Pretty serious situation in the heat we've had lately. Fortunately I have my 50 dollar deductible via CPO. They've had my car since Friday (today is Tuesday) because they had to order the fan.
In the meantime they gave me a 2012 328xi loaner. Nice car but I want my 550i back! Anyway, just giving anyone out there who may have my symptoms some idea about what's going on if you experience this unfortunate situation. My car only has 60k miles on it. I find it odd that a fan would die this early in the car's life. Seems unheard of.
