I'm looking to purchase an E61. I have found a couple 2006 530xi i'm very interested in. But, before I jump and make the purchase. I wanted to know what the E61 owners are doing as far as MPG.

I know BMW claims 18/25. But thats always different from reality.

I recently purchased a 2006 530xi T ( E61) too and I did, for city driving, 460km for 60L of gas.

I'm not saying mine is better, just for your information.

My 2006 with 110k claims it got 29mpg driving 4 hours of highway from New Hampshire thru Vermont ski country into NY, the day I bought it in April. Since then (5 tanks) it's more like 21-22 mixed city/highway. It'll go lower when winter hits, I bet. But it's comparable to my '98 Subaru outback, way more refined and more power so I'm not complaining on mileage. I also only do about 5000 a year on my wagon, so total $ isn't as much a concern as someone who does 20k a year. I also calculate my own mileage, and notice the car's estimate is about 1mpg higher than I'm really getting.

One of the reasons i'm buying a 2nd car is to save on fuel expenses. I was just hoping people are actually getting 20+ mpg since my current GMC is doing 16.9. REALLY was hoping 24-26 mph on average.

 i'll be happy with 21-22 mpg! Most of the driving i'll be doing will be hwy. My house is about 2 miles from the hwy entrance and work is only about another mile off the exit, a total of 18 miles each way. So i'm look'n at 8600 miles per year. The GMC will take the weekend trips.

Anyone else would like to share their current fuel economy/consumption of your E61?

Mine gets 18.5 in city driving and at least 26 on highway. That's cruising at 80-90 mph and the car is tuned. I would say BMW's estimates are a bit conservative.

The trick is that the turbos are dormant at steady cruising speed, so you run on a normal 3.0L i6 when maintaining a set speed. Then when acceleration is called for the turbos wake up and kick into action for a nice surge. In city driving with a lot of stopping and starting they are much more active, and fuel economy is very dependent on how lead footed the driver is.
I use 93 octane.

I don't have wagon, but I have a BIG V8.
So my trip from Leesburg VA (right outside DC) to Montreal (630 miles, using RT 81 then RT 87), avg 27.3 fuel tank last before light comes on (never took there) but it should 500+ miles, at least I know for sure I can go 500+ on one tank easy.

I have a regular N52K which is a 3.0 engine with 272HP. It does around 18-22 MPG on 100% city driving. (Lots of stop & go)

450 - 500 miles to full 18.5 gallon tank is much better than my 320 miles on a 19 gallon full tank.

If you want gas mileage get a 525i. I have a 335i for days I feel like going a little faster and what not, but the 525i is my travel car, work car, etc. I get 24 city and 29 highway. Thats with me figuring out the mpg not the computer.
