Today's the last day of my factory warranty and I noticed that the driver's side door pull is peeling.

I've seen posts about the steering wheel trim being replaced under warranty, but couldn't find any for the door pull/window switch area.

Any service bulletin on this? I found one for the E90 3-series (SI B 51 18 06), but couldn't locate one for E60.

If I can't get it replaced under warranty is there a DIY write-up for refinishing/replacing this part?

My is peeling, too. It is a relatively simple fix, but if you are under warranty then make BMW do it! I cannot for the life of me understand why these parts peel. It isn't like I am scratching at them or something.

Also, the same thing happened on my previous car -- 2003 Audi A4. It was a pain then too to get Audi to replace my window switches. Dealer was calling it wear/tear and blaming me for the peeling. Total BS since dozens of other experienced the same issue! Some vendor is cheaping out on these parts sold to the German car companies! Should I be using some "approved" hand lotion which prevents such crap?

I've also noticed that our leather is very sensitive to sun screen, at least the brand of sun screen that our family uses. I get big white spots wherever skin that has sun screen on it has touched (arm rests, around the seat belt, center console, bottom of the seat, etc.). I have a black interior. It's a pain to remove, simply wiping it doesn't work. I've taken to putting towels down on the seats when I know we'll be riding in the car after applying sun screen (which is pretty often, given what we typically are doing).

Crap. I was told that my new vehicle warranty expired as of 12AM this morning, so there's nothing they can do to have it replaced by BMW. If I had noticed it on Monday when I took it in for some seat repairs, they said it would've been covered with no problem!

That's a huge bummer. I have access to the entire BMW parts catalog, if you'd like I can have my parts guys look for the parts you need, I'll just need the last 7 of your vin so they can pull your package information.

Thanks for the offer. I believe it's P/N 51416983703 for about $30.

I called BMW NA and was told I'd need to take it to the dealer for them to "diagnose" the issue and they may still cover it out of goodwill if it is a manufacturer defect.

sounds like you've already found it, part 10 in black in the diagram below

hopefully they'll just take care of it, when you're that close to the warranty it's almost insulting.

I need to change out mine also. Do you have to remove door panel or do you just pry out the door pull part?

Based on the diagram, it appears that the door panel has to be removed since the trim piece has a screw.

I'm having a similar issue on the pull for a 2000 X5 4.4i. Can someone tell me what the part costs? Both of my front doors have peeling and I don't wear any rings.

You can see the part I'm referring to at the following link. I've circled the pull.

The door pull is multiple parts as seen in the diagram below. The door pull is part numbers 7 and 4 on the E53 X5.

every time i look at my window buttons this peeling bothers me as well. how about an 06 530? Does the door panel have to be removed as well? Do you (ecs) have anything custom like carbon fiber?

The window switches only come in 3 colors from BMW (black gray and tan). We do not sell custom switch for the E60. Shoot me a PM with what color you need and for which door and I'll be happy to find the correct part number for you.
