What do they typically go for? I thought they were between $350 - $400 with-out the airbag. This guy on ebay is claiming it retails for $700? I'm reading this correctly, am I crazy for thinking it's so cheap, or is he?

What's a fair price?

My dealer quoted me $650 installed, so $350-$400 sounds about right.

I paid $315 for mine in June 2002.

Install takes about, oh, 5 minutes when you do it yourself. And the wheel costs no more than $350. That comes out to $3600/hr for labor. Even if it takes you 15 minutes, that would be $1200/hr for labor.

I was in the parts department last week and asked... the guy pulled it up on the screen (where I could see it) and there it was listed as:

M3 Steering Wheel
Cost: $270
Retail Price: $550

Naturally, he quoted me the $550 number :O

I believe I bought mine from Pacific 2.5 years ago for about $285. This is with the black stitching. The color stitched one was more expensive. Install is a no brainer.

At my age it would probably take more than 5-15 minutes :) . Anyway, for those interested in DIY, this link might be helpful - http://bmw330ci.com/DIY_M3_Wheel.htm

Circle BMW quoted me around $400 for the Alcantara ZHP Sterring wheel w/o the airbag.

Circle BMW has them both, colored stiching or black stiching for $340...

No, really.

1. Disconnect battery (<1 minute)
2. Play with switches on steering column to discharge any current (30 sec)
3. Insert screwdriver to trip catch holding airbag in place (15 sec to 5 minutes - depending on luck finding catch)
4. Unplug airbag (15 sec)
5. Remove sterring wheel (30 sec)
6. Place new wheel in place and secure (1 min - only because bolt must be tightened to torque spec)
7. Plug in airbag and snap into place (15 sec)
8. Reconnect battery (1 min)
9. Reset radio presets and clock time (2 min)

It's more difficult to change some lightbulbs than it is to swap out the steering wheel on these cars.

So what's the concensus….colored or non-colored stiching?

I thought I read somewhere that the colored stiching was "reserved" for ///M cars... for example, my wife's 525iT has a sport steering wheel just like the M3 wheel, and it has the black stiching, even though it says ///M on it... Same for her gearshift knob... you can use either one, but some people consider using the colored stiching on a non-///M car as the steering wheel equivalent to putting an ///M badge on your car... It's really your decision in the end... which one looks better to you? :dunno:

When (I replaced the wheel in my E46 (way back when), only the colored stitched wheel was available. While I am sensitive to the M-only aspect, the color did add a nice accent color to brighten up the interior.
