I'm getting ridiculously log MPG in the city. I calculated base on the number of miles driven and fuel gauge indicator. After careful observation, I found out that 1 unit of fuel gauge was used after driving about 6 miles. There are 20 units in the gauge. Just to be sure I'm not crazy I drove on the highway and got about 17~18 MPG. Not sure why it is so low.

I am only getting about 13 mpg in city driving for my 08 550i. I do short drives so I am not surprised of the low mileage. I have gotten about 27mph on the highway on a long road trip.

If I get about 13 MPG in city, I will be happy but 5~6 is quite low. Not so sure there could be any problems I should look into!

I don't see how one can calculate fuel milage from a visual indication of where the gas gage is.

Record your miles traveled and the amount of fuel used. Then get back to us.

Or reset the trip indicator on I drive to calculate consumption for you.

I know visual observation of fuel gauge may not be exactly accurate but it should give ball park figures. I reset the total miles as the needle reach on each unit on both high ways and in the city. This is how I was able to tell approximate 6 MPG in the city and 18 on the HW.

you bought a car with 360 hp and a large v-8, what the hell do you expect?

I'm trying to understand other similar cars have the same MPG just to be sure I 'm not the only one. I have heard even M5's get 10MPG/city so thought it is strange with my car 6 MPG in the city.

That doesn't make sense, you should be getting at the worst like 14mpg in the city. I would get the car looked at by BMW to see whats going on. I get all around 17.5 mpg this includes having some fun with the car and opening it up from time to time and smoking those G37's all day...

Don't lie, you had fun driving it in town too. Your mileage on the hwy indicates you like to have fun on the autobahn too. I actually have an 05 545 and I can get 25 to 27 mph going 70 mph with cruise control. Of course I live in FL so our roads are mostly flat. I have been known to get less than 10 mpg on the hwy. :bigpimp:

How did you measure 14mpg in the city? I reset the trip indicator today and drove in the city and it comes about 18mpg according to the computer screen. But, I lost about 2 units in fuel gauge indicator and total mile driven was about 13 so in the ball park I got around 6mpg in the city, which is quite different from what trip indicator is saying. I wonder how you come up with 14mpg. In NY cops are every where so no so easy to smoke those G37's although I like to do very much..

I don't know how you guys do it driving into NY City everyday. That would drive me crazy not able to have WOT in part of my commute to work. I hate the rush hour in a fast taxi in NYC. I can believe the mpg is low up there. move to FL and you'll save money driving and faster commutes. Hey no state income tax either. We have Big Gulp drinks down here too.

I am addicted to my exhaust at 4500 rpm and dont have gas mileage like that. God, I still love this car.

4.8L isnt a large V-8

to the OP: The only way I see you getting such bad MPG is you live in a congested city. A lot of stop and go so you never get to coast.

My Tahoe 6" Lift on 35" Mud terrains gets 11-12 in the city. But my town isnt too congested and my route to work has some good 55-60 coasting spots.

Im seeing 17MPG city on my 550i

+1. Not even "mid size".

It's 294 cubic inches.

As a reference point, my first car, a 67 Mustang, had a 289 in it. It was the 4 bbl version, considered "High Output". It had 225 HP.
